Imagine this; can you?

It’s evening and you are getting your kids ready for dinner, or maybe it’s you and your partner. You leave your shelter that holds cots (no mattresses, just cots) with limited blankets or pillows, you walk together across a parking lot to a community room with plastic conference tables and folding chairs and 75 strangers. You have no choice of “what’s for dinner” because you will be served whatever may have been donated by a local restaurant or market. After the meal, you return to your room where there is no TV, no radio, no table or chairs, no couch or comfy chair but just cots. Yes, your cat or dog can be there with you and maybe you were lucky enough to have some food for them, if dog or cat food was donated. You are warm, it’s better than sleeping in the park or in a parking garage where maybe you had to sleep when the temperature was above 32 degrees.

What I just explained is where I toured today. A Code Blue shelter where the 78 people currently staying there are grateful. Grateful for these welcoming people who work at the shelter, who provide these accommodations and food, grateful because tonight, they are warm, safe, and they have had a chance for a meal.
