Arghhh. Join us at Haw River as an EE Instructor -- now hiring!!

Our mission is to facilitate safe and fun outdoor “experiences” for all ages, while fostering a better understanding and appreciation for the environment.

We’re seeking individuals with experience working with children in an outdoor setting, who are dedicated to connecting children with nature. When hiring we look for creative, fun and high-energy individuals to become Summit Instructors. Summit Instructors work with children ages 7 to 18. The Summit offers programming ranging from 1-day experiences up to 3-day/2-night residential stays for school groups and youth organizations. Programs we offer include Piedmont Wildlife, Animal Adaptations, Wilderness Survival, Orienteering, Teambuilding, Soils, Forest Bathing, Box Turtle Biology, Dendrology and Wetlands Ecology.

The EE instructor positions are seasonal positions with the NC State Park System. A four-year degree is required for consideration and two years relevant experience. Projected start date is mid-May, ending November 23rd, 2026, with the potential of re-hire in February 2027. Your employment will include a salary of $18/hr. with a guaranteed 40-hour work week. Birding tomorrow! 🐦Drop in at the Iron Ore Belt Access between 1-2pm to learn basic bird ID skills and help with the 2025 Spring Bird Count.

🌦 Rain or Shine!☀️Join park staff tomorrow at 1pm for an easy guided hike through several Haw River habitats while using the iNaturalist app to discover and identify plants, animals, and more along the trails. This interactive hike is perfect for nature enthusiasts of all ages. Meet at The Summit Access in the courtyard outside of the Main Lodge (building closest to flag pole). Part of the NC Science Festival.

Astronomy Tomorrow Cancelled: Due to forecasted cloudy weather which will make nighttime astronomy difficult to impossible, we have decided to cancel Deep Sky Astronomy for tomorrow night, Saturday 4/19/25. An unfortunate reality of planning astronomy programs is that we never know until the last minute if the weather will cooperate and we just didn't get lucky this time.

We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to see you at future NC Science Festival events hosted by Haw River State Park, such as our iNaturalist Discovery Hike on 4/26. Happy sunny day, Iron Ore Belt Access is open again! Let's hope that was the last burst of winter, we are ready for the spring. Still a little chilly this morning, but looks like tempatures are going to be on the rise! Who can spot the first crocus sprouting?

Happy snowy day! Please be advised that Iron Ore Belt Access will be closed on Thursday, February 20th due to the weather. We will reassess tomorrow morning and hopefully be able to reopen. We would love to see your snowy day photos!

This mama and her pups were dropped at the park today. We understand it takes a lot to care for dogs, and sometimes it is too much. However, we ask please bring them to the main office rather than just letting them loose in the park. We don't make judgments, but rather accept them with love and caring, and ensure they get to the proper help.
Thank you to Rockingham County Animal Shelter-Reidsville, NC for helping get this mama and her pups the help they needed.

Iron Ore Belt Access will be hosting the ignaural Groundhogs Lap Race today! Trails are open for the general public, but note runners will be out all day! Cheer them on as they run 3, 6 or 12 hours! We are tired just thinking of running for that long! Happy race day and stay safe!
