This Autism Awareness Month, Kindred Bakery BK is sharing the story of why we were founded.

When founders Qiana Daniels and Nigel Thompson found themselves facing a system with no meaningful pathway for their Autistic son, they refused to accept it.

In 2022 they founded Kindred Bakery BK, a parent-led nonprofit using baking, entrepreneurship, and hands-on learning to build real pathways to employment for neurodivergent and neurotypical youth. Our mission: making inclusivity the norm, not the exception.

In 9 days, we celebrate how far we have come at the 2026 Hummingbird Soiree. This evening is for them and for every person who believes every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive.

The Disability Cliff is real. Over 50% of young adults with autism disengage from work within 2 years of high school. Only 37% are employed 8 years after graduation.

Every year, thousands of young adults with autism and intellectual disabilities age out of school systems with no meaningful pathway forward — a moment advocates call the disability cliff.

Over 50% disengage from work and education within two years of high school graduation. Only 37% are employed up to eight years after graduation.

Kindred exists to change those numbers — through the kitchen.

Two of our participants have already earned paid positions as kitchen assistants. The work is producing results.

On April 27, we gather at the Hummingbird Soirée to celebrate the young people changing these numbers and to invest in everything still to come.
