Pumpkin season has officially arrived at Barbara’s Delights 🎃

This month my Tour of Italy takes us to Emilia-Romagna, and to Ferrara, home of the traditional Torta Tenerina. The classic is made with chocolate. Mine swaps it for sweet, creamy pumpkin: a delicate crust, a soft, tender center, and all the warmth of fall in one slice.

Tenerina means “tender,” and it lives up to its name.

The Little Dragon’s Castle - Every cake tells a story, and this one feels like a little fairytale come to life.

I imagine a tiny castle tucked away in an enchanted garden, where roses climb the walls, golden details hide like little treasures, and a sweet little dragon lives happily inside.
The pink tower, the soft blue walls, the winding flowers, and that little flag at the top… it feels like a place where you can almost imagine someone opening the door and stepping into their own magical world.

And maybe that’s what I love most about creating custom cakes: not just making something beautiful, but creating a little world around someone’s celebration.

Some cakes stay in your heart forever because they were imagined, dreamed of, and wished for.

Sometimes that wish belongs to a little boy or girl. Sometimes it belongs to a mom who wants to create something truly special — something her child will remember.

I love being the person who gets to bring that wish to life. Knowing that little eyes will light up when they see their cake for the first time brings me so much joy. ❤️

Because a cake is never just a cake.

It’s the centerpiece of the celebration.
It becomes the setting for some of the sweetest photographs.
And one day, it may be one of those little details that brings a childhood memory back to life.

This vanilla cake, filled with milk chocolate ganache and raspberry jam, was created for one of those special wishes. The matching cookie was inspired by the invitation, bringing the whole celebration together.

And that’s what I love most about creating custom cakes: turning a dream into something you can see, share, and remember. ✨

Did you know I’m Italian? 🇮🇹 Born and raised in Milan for my first 40 years — that’s where I fell in love with baking, whipping up desserts for family dinners and friends since I was a little girl. But in Italy, pastry shops were everywhere, so I never had to make my own!

Moving to Connecticut changed that fast — barely a pasticceria in sight, so now I bake everything myself. Funny thing though: I used to have a real sweet tooth, but now the joy is just in creating. Sometimes I taste it, sometimes I don’t — the process is the reward.

Case in point: this cake, inspired by the new Dolce & Gabbana collection that just walked the runway in Taormina, Sicily.

The comeback.

Some recipes surprise me. This one completely stole the show.

When I introduced my Caprese al Limone during my Tour of Italy series, I had no idea so many of you would fall in love with it. Messages kept coming in asking for the recipe and wondering when I’d make it again.

So, it’s back!

Originally from the beautiful island of Capri, this flourless Italian cake is made with almonds, white chocolate, and fresh lemon—a simple combination that tastes like an Italian summer.

The trickiest part of making a macaron (and why it matters) 👀

Macarons are made with the French meringue method — and every batch is a little bit of a gamble. Humidity, oven temperature, how long you rest them, how you fold the batter… any one of these can mean the difference between a perfect shell with that signature “foot” and a batch that cracks, hollows out, or never rises right.

I’ve made thousands of these. I still pay attention to every single one.

Two new macaron flavors join the July lineup: Coconut & Chocolate Chips, and Mango.

The Coconut & Chocolate Chips has a super-concentrated coconut coulis, mini chocolate chips dotted throughout, and organic dried coconut all around the edge. The Mango has mango coulis mixed right into the buttercream, with a pure mango coulis heart hidden in the center.
