We all know the saying "Finders keepers, losers weepers".
At the time this proverb was first put out into the world there were a lot less controls over our possessions and who had ownership rights.
So to think that just because you find something it should automatically be yours really isn't right.
Nor is saying that the original owner has no recourse and should mourn the loss of the item.
So when one of our team members recently found a ring that our client had been missing for quite some time, it obviously wasn't hers to keep any more than anything else we may find during the course of any project.
The client was thrilled to have eyes on it again...and because she knows how much time was spent sorting through a pile of jewelry on her dresser where the ring had been all along but just couldn't be seen amongst all the other stuff...she is never going to take her eyes off of it again!
That said, she now has a system to keep track of all of the jewelry so hopefully she won't have to keep that close of an eye on any of it.

OK - we're back in school, but the organization tips don't stop there. Throughout the school year, try implementing this rule in your family - ONE IN, ONE OUT! As new supplies, clothes, toys, gear, electronics, and crafts come into your home, find a similar item that is no longer used to donate, sell, or, if needed, just throw it away. This model is sustainable and helps us to not overconsume.

Our Chief of Chaos to Calm recently ran into a former client from December 2024. Beth spent 2 mornings helping her declutter and let go of a lot of her family keepsakes, as well as do some reorganizing of the overall space. In the course of their time together, Beth happened to mention that she was going home to make hundreds of potato latkes for the upcoming Hanukkah holiday to distribute to friends and a few longstanding clients. When she said it had been a long time since she had latkes, Beth knew that she was going to need to make sure she made enough for her and promptly dropped off a dozen a few days later.

Fast forward to June 2026 at a Superior Chamber speed networking event, and while it took a minute for Beth and Andrea to realize their former connection, they are now preparing to do an IJS Messy Business Happy Hour to discuss Andrea's new business as a grief coach for those struggling with the loss of a loved one. While most would not necessarily associate the work of a professional organizer with death, the reality is our clients are going through all different stages of life and often turn to us for resources.
