I absolutely love creating first birthday cakes! 🎂✨ This sail-themed one was one of my favorites. 🎉🛍️

And a fun little detail: it matched the oil painting of my Belize vacation that I painted a while ago—hanging in my kitchen—marvelously! 🎨🌴💕

There are pastry shops… and then there are institutions.
Pasticceria Poppella is part of the soul of Naples. Founded in 1920 in the historic Rione Sanità, it has grown through three generations of the Scognamillo family. Today, under the vision of Ciro Poppella, it has become one of the greatest symbols of Neapolitan pastry, where tradition and innovation exist in perfect harmony.
As the owner of Dolci Momenti Bakery in Texas, I can honestly say that this was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life.
This summer, I had the incredible privilege of spending a few days inside Poppella's laboratory. And what I witnessed was beyond anything I had imagined.
The level of craftsmanship. The precision. The discipline. The passion.
It wasn't just pastry production—it was a perfectly choreographed dance. Every movement had purpose. Every detail mattered. It was excellence in its purest form.
Watching some of Naples' most iconic desserts come to life was fascinating. Behind every pastry is not only an exceptional recipe, but an extraordinary team of people who dedicate themselves every single day to preserving a tradition while pushing it forward.
A special thank you to Raffaele , an amazing pastry chef who patiently answered every one of my endless questions. I can only imagine how annoying I must have been, but your generosity made this experience unforgettable.
It was also a privilege to meet Francesco from Rosticceria d’autore, Sicily, collaborating with Ciro on new creations. Watching him work—with such precision, focus, and genuine passion—was a lesson in itself.
And above all, my deepest gratitude goes to Ciro Poppella
Thank you for opening the doors of your sweet paradise, for sharing your knowledge so generously, and for allowing me to witness what true excellence looks like. Experiences like this remind me that great pastry is about so much more than recipes—it's about people, history, discipline, and love for the craft.
Some workshops teach techniques.
The best ones change the way you see your craft forever.

From Capri to Dolci Momenti ❤️🇮🇹

I'm finally home after an unforgettable trip to Italy—a journey filled with family, lifelong friends, and the places that will always feel like home: Naples, the Amalfi Coast, Capri, and the Dolomites.

One of the most meaningful moments of my trip was returning to Marina Grande in Capri to visit Signora Gianpaola at Bar Gabbiano.

Decades ago, she and her family created this special little café, which has become a true landmark in Marina Grande.
Back when I worked as a tour guide in Capri, every visit included a stop at Bar Gabbiano for a slice of their famous Torta Caprese. Rich with almonds and chocolate, it was—and still is—the best Caprese cake on the island.

After watching me come back for "just one more slice" more times than she could count, Signora Gianpaola said, "Gitl, It's time you learn how to make it." She generously shared her treasured family recipe with me.

My first attempt? A complete disaster! 😂

But that recipe became part of my journey.

Years later, when I opened Dolci Momenti, Torta Caprese became one of our signature cakes and one of your all-time favorites.

Standing beside Signora Gianpaola again, in her beautifully renovated
Bar Gabbiano, while my daughter slept peacefully in my arms, I couldn't help but reflect on how much life has changed. I've crossed oceans, changed careers, built a business, and started a family. Yet one thing has remained the same: my love for Torta Caprese and the incredible people who inspired me along the way.

Some recipes are more than a list of ingredients—they are stories that shape us. They carry memories, generosity, friendship, and the courage to begin something new.

Grazie di cuore, Signora Gianpaola. Your kindness became part of my story, and a little piece of Capri lives on in every Torta Caprese I bake.

❤️ With gratitude,
Elena

I wanted to share a personal achievement.

After two years of study, I officially completed the San Antonio Museum of Art's Docent Education Program!

It was an incredible journey. I learned so much about 's extensive collection, met inspiring educators, and made wonderful friends along the way.

As a tour guide in Italy, I felt quite confident when it came to Ancient Mediterranean and European art. But this program challenged me to explore entirely new worlds—Ancient China, Asia, Oceania, and the Arts of the Americas. It was both humbling and incredibly rewarding.

One thing that made this experience even more special? My daughter, Giulia, who was just two years old when I started, attended every in-person class with me. Today, some of her favorite bedtime stories are about the Greek gods, and I love that we shared this adventure together.

You may be wondering... what does this have to do with my bakery?

More than you might think.

The program deepened my understanding of visual art, symbolism, craftsmanship, and the stories that objects carry across cultures. And I've always believed that food is one of humanity's most sacred art forms. For thousands of years, people have marked celebrations, rituals, love, loss, and community through food. Learning about art from different cultures has given me an even deeper appreciation for the history and meaning behind what I create.

Every cake tells a story. Every dessert carries a little piece of culture, memory, and beauty.

Have you ever discovered that learning something completely unrelated unexpectedly made you better at what you love to do? I'd love to hear your story in the comments.

What does it mean when a cake turns out great from a home baker’s perspective?
For me, it’s not just about how the cake looks—it’s about moments like these:
✨ It was for a returning customer.
✨ She reached out to tell me that she and her family loved it before I even had a chance to send my follow-up message.
✨ She shared photos from the celebration with me (and I absolutely love when you share your special moments! I only post customer photos with your explicit permission).
✨ Not only did she send pictures, but they were beautifully captured by a professional photographer.

✨ I was given some creative freedom with the design, and I was genuinely happy with how it turned out.
As a home baker, there’s nothing more rewarding than knowing that something I created became part of a meaningful family celebration.
And here’s a little secret for my dream customers: if you want to become one of my favorites, send me your feedback and photos after your event! Seeing those cake slices, happy faces, and celebration moments truly makes my day. ❤️
Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your sweetest memories.
