Mumzees is on a mission to put the breastfeeding mother, at the forefront of the postpartum, newborn stage and beyond through incredibly delicious lactation cookies and thoughtfully crafted lactation kits. This mission was inspired in huge part by my sister’s support during my breastfeeding journey, as well as her story and passing. You will see her heart, favorite color and even her name, all aro

To all the beautiful black breastfeeding mamas out there, may you feel celebrated, supported, uplifted and a little extra loved this week as we celebrate your breastfeeding journey during black breastfeeding week! 💖

Disparities in breastfeeding reflect a similarly dismal picture when it comes to maternal health in the United States – and how this disproportionally hurts Black families. The U.S. has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the developed world. Black mothers are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white mothers. Additionally, Black babies are more likely to be born prematurely. The mortality rate for Black babies in America is more than double that of white babies. In 2012, three maternal and infant health advocates – Kiddada Green, Kimberly Seals Allers, and Anayah Sangodele-Ayoka – created Black Breastfeeding Week. Held August 25 to 31, it’s intended to amplify, promote, and support Black breastfeeding.

The goal is to highlight breastfeeding disparities and reduce breastfeeding barriers among women of color. Specifically, the founders want to raise awareness about five breastfeeding-related issues in the Black community:

👉The high mortality rate among Black infants
👉High rates of diet-related disease among Black children
👉Lack of diversity in the lactation field
👉Unique cultural barriers to breastfeeding
👉Lack of breastfeeding support
