This one is close to my heart. Apple blossoms don't last long β€” and neither will these spots.

⏰ 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM
πŸ‘₯ Only 6 seats available

Back in the day... πŸ•°οΈ

Summers looked a little different, didn't they?

Bare feet on porches, the sound of a hand crank ice cream maker on a Sunday afternoon, rhubarb pie cooling on the windowsill, laundry snapping on the line, and the smell of bean hole beans cooking in the ground.

Nobody had to tell you to slow down. The days were just slower, fuller, and quieter in the best possible way.

We think about those days a lot here on the homestead. We try, in our own small way, to keep them alive. In the bread we bake, the jelly we put up, the workshops we gather for, the old skills we refuse to let go of.

What is a summer memory from your childhood that you carry close? We would love to hear it as we sit barefoot on our porch waiting for the beans to finish and the pie to cool.

What's your favorite rhubarb recipe?

The rhubarb is growing beautifully and we want to know, "What's your favorite way to use it?"

Strawberry rhubarb pie? A simple jam? Rhubarb crisp warm from the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream? Rhubarb bread? A sauce over pork? Something your grandmother used to make that you have never seen anywhere else?

Drop it in the comments. We genuinely want to know! There is nothing better than a community of people who still know what to do with a good garden harvest. πŸ‘©β€πŸ³

And don't forget β€” our Dandelion Jelly Workshop is tomorrow morning at 9am! If you reserved a seat, we will see you soon. If you would like to join us, there is still time. Head to our website now!πŸ‘‡

Rhubarb is one of those plants that asks almost nothing of you and then one spring morning you look out the window and there it is, those enormous, beautiful leaves and those brilliant red stalks, bold as anything and ready to work.

We love rhubarb here on the homestead, and this time of year it is one of the first delicious gifts the garden gives us.

A few things worth knowing about this remarkable plant:

πŸ“ Rhubarb is technically a vegetable, though we almost always treat it like a fruit in the kitchen. It has been grown in American gardens since the early 1800s and was prized long before that in Chinese herbal medicine for its digestive and cleansing properties.

πŸ“ Only the stalks are used β€” the leaves are toxic and should never be eaten or composted where animals can reach them.

πŸ“ It is naturally very tart, which is exactly what makes it so wonderful. It balances beautifully with sweet fruits like strawberries, apples, and cherries, and it pairs wonderfully with honey and maple syrup.

πŸ“ Rhubarb is rich in Vitamin K, calcium, and antioxidants. It supports bone health and digestion, and has been used in traditional medicine for centuries.

πŸ“ It freezes beautifully. Chop the stalks and freeze flat on a sheet pan, then bag them for use all year long.

Ours is coming along beautifully right now, and we cannot wait to put it to work very soon. πŸ“

Speaking of which, we have a Rhubarb Lemonade recipe up on the blog that is bright, beautiful, and tastes like the very best of early summer. Come find it! πŸ‹

If there is one herb I would encourage every homesteader and every home gardener to tuck into their garden, it is lemon balm.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a gentle, cheerful member of the mint family that has been growing in gardens since at least the Middle Ages. Its leaves are soft and slightly crinkled, and when you brush past them or press one between your fingers they release the most lovely, clean lemon fragrance. It is one of those small garden pleasures that never gets old.

But lemon balm is far more than pretty. Here is why we love having it here on the homestead:

πŸ‹ It is wonderfully calming. Lemon balm has been used for centuries as a gentle remedy for anxiety, restlessness, and sleeplessness. A simple cup of lemon balm tea before bed is one of the oldest and kindest things you can do for yourself.

πŸ‹ It supports digestion. Traditionally used to ease bloating, gas, and an unsettled stomach, it is a natural after-dinner comfort.

πŸ‹ It lifts the spirit. Old herbalists called it the "gladdening herb." Lemon balm has genuine mood-lifting properties.

πŸ‹ It is endlessly useful in the kitchen. Fresh in salads, steeped into syrups, folded into baked goods, tucked into a pitcher of water or lemonade. It plays beautifully with fruit, honey, and anything summery.

πŸ‹ It is generous and easy. Once established, lemon balm asks very little and gives abundantly. It will return faithfully each spring and spread happily if you let it.

We grow it, dry it, and use it all year long. If you don't have it yet, find a little corner for it. You'll love that you did.

OLD SKILLS FOUND NEW HANDS!

We held our first ever Dandelion Jelly Workshop on Saturday! 🌼

Our seats were completely full, and from the very first moment it was hands-on, warm, and so full of joy. Everyone gathered around, learned together, and went home with jars of golden jelly they made with their own hands.

But here is what has truly moved my heart this week β€” the messages and photos that have been coming in ever since. Friends making dandelion jelly at home for the first time, all by themselves, and mothers making it with their children. There is something deeply beautiful about watching an old skill find new hands, and I cannot stop smiling over every single photo.

This is exactly why we do what we do here at A Simple Life Homestead

And the good news? We are doing it again!

🌼 Dandelion Jelly Workshop β€” Saturday, May 30th Β· 9am–11am
Seats are limited. Visit our website to register.

And that is just the beginning. We have SO much more coming up this season:

πŸ“ Strawberry Rhubarb Jam
🍯 Clover Honey Workshop
πŸ₯¬ Fermented Vegetables..and SO MANY MORE!

Stay close, friends. This is going to be a beautiful season of learning together. πŸ‘©β€πŸ³

Today we pause.

On this Memorial Day, we step away from the garden, the kitchen, the everyday rhythms of homestead life to remember the men and women who gave everything so that we could have the freedom to live these simple, beautiful lives we hold so dear.

The freedom to tend a garden, to bake bread, to gather around the table, to worship freely, and to love our neighbors well.

None of it is small.
None of it was free.

We are grateful beyond words.

We honor them today with hearts full of remembrance and deep, abiding respect.

To every family who has an empty chair today, we see you.

Thank you.

"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven."
β€” Ecclesiastes 3:1

Whatever season you find yourself in today, a season of great joy, or one of deep difficulty, take heart. God is not surprised by where you are. He is not distant. He is steadfast and unchanging, even when everything around us feels uncertain.

The seasons of life we walk through are temporary. They are not without purpose. There is meaning in the waiting, in the growing, and yes, even in the letting go.

I have held close a saying for many years now. It has become something of a quiet mantra for my heart:

"We cannot, Lord, Thy purpose see, but all is good that's done by Thee."

May that truth settle gently over you this Sunday. You are held. πŸ™
