Definitely a step forward.

FARE celebrates the passage of a landmark new law requiring allergen labeling on all prepackaged foods prepared and sold on-site at establishments like delis, bakeries, cafeterias, sandwich shops, food trucks, and ice cream parlors across New York State.
Signed by Governor Kathy Hochul and championed by Senator Pete Harckham and Assemblymember Jen Lunsford, this law closes a critical gap. Until now, FDA allergen labeling rules did not apply to foods prepared and packaged in-house. For the nearly two million in New York living with food allergies, this left too much room for uncertainty and risk.
This progress is the direct result of tireless advocacy from local families and community leaders including Stacey ​Saiontz (FARE Advocacy Committee co-chair), student advocate Jared Saiontz, Thomas Silvera and Dina Hawthorne (Elijah-Alavi Foundation), ​Jill Mindlin (FARE Advocacy Committee co-chair), Maya Kosoff, Rose Ostrow, Julian Ostrow, Georgina Cornago, Amy Weber, Jane Weber, Toni Gaudiosi, and Allergy Advocates in New York, including Jon Terry, Toni Taylor, Maureen Herzog, Melissa Mueller-Douglas and so many others who shared their lived experiences and pushed for safer, more transparent labeling. Their voices helped lawmakers understand just how essential clear labeling is.
FARE applauds Senator Harckham, Assemblymember Lunsford, Governor Hochul, and every advocate who made this progress possible. This law takes effect next year, and it is a significant step toward a safer future for everyone managing food allergies.”

Southwest… have you gone nuts? FARE is deeply concerned by Southwest Airlines’ plan to serve pistachios onboard beginning in January. As a tree nut allergen, pistachios pose serious risks to passengers with life-threatening nut allergies. While no travel environment can be completely allergen-free, adding a common allergen to in-flight service without clear mitigation measures is alarming. We urge Southwest to implement transparent protocols, allow early boarding for passengers to clean seats and surfaces, and ensure every aircraft carries an epinephrine administration option appropriate for food allergy reactions.
