Attention all beekeepers and bee lovers! The Southern Tier Beekeepers Association is holding their September meeting this coming Tuesday, September 1st. I believe the honey entries for this year's tasting contest are due at the meeting. We will also have an activity planned for all that wish to join in. We will be fabricating wildflower seed balls! Clay balls will be packed with wildflower seeds. You can distribute them wherever you please. Along the roadside, in fields, wherever. The ball will break down; seeds germinate and grow. Doors open at 6:00pm, meeting starts around 6:30pm. We must be out of the room by 9:00pm. Please come join us and have some fun!

Southern Tier Beekeepers Assoc. held a Meet & Greet last Saturday at Highland Park in Endwell. We had a nice turnout considering we did not advertise tremendously. We were hoping to piggyback off of the Human Society duck drop popularity. Unfortunately, the NYS Gaming Commission shut that down. We had a nice turnout of STBA members to talk to interested people. I personally spoke to 2 beekeepers asking for help and 3 people that hope to start beekeeping. Kat, our temporary tattoo artist was the busiest of all, Thank you to everyone that got involved and helped out!

It's that time of the year. Time for the first annual STBA Meet & Greet? The weather report looks good. Come join us and learn about honeybees as well as native bees. Their importance to the entire eco-system and how to help them survive in today's conditions! Hope to see everyone tomorrow at Highland Park!

On Thursday August 6th, Larry and I spoke to the members of the Virgil Community Living Center about the year in the life of a beekeeper. They contacted us at the Cortland Jr Fair when we were tabling in the agriculture education building. They were amazed at how involved and difficult beekeeping actually is. We answered questions galore! Thank you for inviting us.

STBA held its August meeting on the 4th. Our quest speaker was Anne Mils. She works for New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets which overseas agriculture policy, food safety and programs supporting New York Farmers. Anne Mils is involved in Honeybee health to protect the state from potential problems. NYS is home to more than 60,000 bee colonies. Her department inspects colonies throughout the state and monitors hive movement in and out of the state. They inspected over 9,000 hives last year looking for European Foul Brood disease, American Foul Brood disease and Varroa mite levels along with several other viruses. She also spoke about invasive hornets on the rise like the Yellow Legged Hornet in Georgia and Asian Killer hornet in the state of Washington because these hornets' prey primarily on honeybees coming and going to hives. Thank you, Anne! It was very informative.

Southern Tier Beekeepers Association August meeting is this Tuesday the 4th. All are welcome to join us and listen to the NUC Commander himself, Larry Huggins! We meet at the Town of Chenango Town Hall on upper Front Street, Binghamton. 1529 State Route 12. Doors open at 6:00pm, meeting starts at 6:30pm. Meeting closes by 9:00pm. We will be discussing what beekeepers should be doing and experiencing in the month of August. We will also have sign-up of volunteers for the STBA Meet & Greet at Highland Park, Endwell on Saturday August 22nd. Discussion regarding the honey tasting contest will take place. Please join us!
