Introducing Food for Thought, my new series where I find the best local spots in the DMV, get my work done, and put you on to the gems you’ve been sleeping on.

Episode 1 took me to in Laurel, MD — and I need to be honest with y’all. I had never heard of this place. Never noticed it. Drove past Laurel more times than I can count.

The Ahmad brothers built something special here. Mediterranean and Southern food under one roof, halal, fresh, made to order. The shawarma, the bowls, the kabobs… and then that fried chicken. Golden brown. Crisped to perfection. In a Mediterranean spot. It works. It more than works.

The camera didn’t do the plate justice. You have to go.

This one is from production day.
This was filmed during my Kiva interview earlier this year, a day I’ll never forget. That box in my hands? That’s a CakedMail delivery for Baltimore Community Lending. Custom cupcakes. Branded packaging. A business card with my name on it.
I wasn’t supposed to end up here. I was supposed to just bake.
But somewhere between driving to Baltimore for kitchen access and building a food infrastructure company, I realized: the product was never just the cupcakes. The product was the proof.
Proof that a Black woman from Beltsville could get a Kiva loan, film an interview, ship to financial institutions, and launch a workforce accelerator…all from the same kitchen that almost didn’t exist.
Day 5. Still building. Still proving it.

Today I turn 34. 🎂

And this year, my birthday gift to myself is giving away the best thing I've ever built.

Foodī Academy is officially live. 🩷

For the past 7 years I've been building Caked and Baked LLC out of late nights, long drives to Baltimore for commercial kitchen time, mistakes I couldn't afford, lessons nobody warned me about, and the stubborn belief that food entrepreneurs deserve real infrastructure … not just inspiration.

Today I'm opening the doors.

🩷 FOODĪ ACADEMY — a 6-week food entrepreneurship workforce accelerator in Maryland. Founding Cohort starts June 1 for 4-8 food entrepreneurs. Real attorneys, bankers, federal contractors, and farmers teaching it. Sliding scale tuition. Full scholarships available. Graduation dinner July 10.

🩷 FOODĪ COMMUNITY — a national Facebook group open TODAY for food entrepreneurs everywhere. Whether you're in Maryland or anywhere else in this country, you have a home.

Tomorrow I turn 34. 🩷

Seven years ago I was baking cakes out of my home kitchen, praying someone would order one.

Three years ago I became Caked and Baked LLC.

Last year I prepared myself for the most monumental shift of my career.

This year I’m a federal contractor. A network of farms. A curriculum. Speakers. Everything I needed 7 years ago.

And tomorrow on my birthday I’m giving it all to the next wave of food entrepreneurs.

Because the best gift I can give myself is making sure no one else has to figure it out alone.
