After more than 36 years of creating cakes, it is time for me to hang up my apron and put down my piping bags/spatula. Who would have thought that a hobby in which i had no formal training would develop into a career!

I have enjoyed my work---loved the challenge of melding art/baking/engineering, was able to work from home and make my own hours (which in the summer were too many). Over the years I have shared major life moments with many clients, some of whom I now consider to be extended family.

Now it's time to enjoy the next chapter of my life! Wishing everyone all the best.

Tomorrow is a BIG day in PNW---opening day of shrimp season (at least it is on Hood Canal). HUNDREDS of boats, 4 times as many pots with miles and miles of lines to wrap around propellers. Best of luck, fellow fisher folk, and may we all have a limit of shrimp to put on the "barbie" for tomorrow's dinner!

Here's a new spin on a "geology" related cake. Rather than having a geode imbedded in to the cake, the client wanted an area that looked like marble, with gold embellishments. It was fun trying something a bit more edgy.

I realize that March Madness has already ended, but the craziness of the March Hare has not! Crazy hat, teacup spilling out flowers, Cheshire cat, cards and toadstools---what more could you want (except maybe a game of croquet with flamingos as your mallets). As the Midwest is getting hammered with blizzard conditions, a little whimsey seemed like a good thing to add to the day.

I do have fun making b'day cakes for my grandkids---it's always interesting to see what they come up with for ideas. This year, my grandson decided he wanted a monster truck cake. I confess to having non-edible trucks on the cake (he wanted the trucks to play with, and I didn't want to spend the time making that many vehicles!) but the rest was edible. Vroom!

It's not often that one has the opportunity to make their OWN wedding cake. As a former geologist (more specifically, mineralogist), marrying a man that she met because of their mutual interest in minerals, a geode cake seemed to be an appropriate cake design. I had the honor of helping this amazing musician, Craig Ostrom, celebrate his birthday by replicating his Telecaster. I'm not sure mine version had the same sound quality as his, but hopefully mine tasted better!
