February 15, 1922 marks an historic day in Baltimore City when a group of African Americans built the Douglas Theater that became known as the legendary The Royal at 1329 Pennsylvania Avenue. It was the most famous theater along Pennsylvania Avenue and one of a circuit of five such theaters, The Apollo in Harlem, New York, Howard in Washington DC, Earl in Philadelphia and Regal in Chicago.
Pennsylvania Avenue was the hub for Black Baltimore, and the Royal Theater was the place to be. There, they rubbed shoulders with Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Ethel Waters, Pearl Bailey, Billie Holliday, Chick Webb, Ethel Ennis and even former Frederick Douglass High School graduates Cab Calloway and Thurgood Marshall, and so many more African American legends.
Yesterday, Council President Nick Mosby joined Mr. James Hamlin, leader of the Royal Theater & Community Heritage Corporation and owner of The Avenue Bakery, and community members to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Theater. We will continue to tell the stories that happened there and to keep all of Baltimore history alive.

As we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Theatre, we extend our gratitude to Mr. James Hamlin and the Royal Theater & Community Heritage Corporation for allowing us to take a walk down Baltimore’s rich history, but, more importantly, for keeping the restoration of Pennsylvania Avenue and the Royal Theater in the forefront.
Today, we celebrate. Tomorrow, we get to work.
The Avenue Bakery
What a true part of The Pennsylvania Avenue Legacy. I'm a regular patron here and I must admit the quality of service and baked goods is A+
Today, Council President Nick Mosby shared some inspiring words about James Hamlin and his passion about revitalizing the Pennsylvania Avenue corridor. The Avenue Bakery stands as an important testimony to all Pennslyvania Avenue has the potential to become.
10 years ago, Council President Nick Mosby stood with James Hamlin for the grand opening of The Avenue Bakery. Mr. Hamlin made the conscious decision to open the bakery to "bring people back to Baltimore's historic Pennsylvania Avenue".
In the decade since the Avenue Bakery opened, Mr. Hamlin has become known for his signature "Poppay's Rolls" and other sweet treats that have people traveling from all over the state to sample.
Today, Council President Mosby stood with the Hamlin family and friends to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Avenue Bakery and all of the contributions Mr. Hamlin has and will continue to make on the historic Pennsylvania Avenue.
