Smith's Bakeries Smith's Bakeries was founded in Bakersfield in 1945 by Howard Smith
and Roy Balmain. Their goal was to provide the best possible baked goods for the community.

Store Locations Closed Sun Over the years, Smith's has grown to several locations. Jim Balmain, who has been at Smith's for over 50 years and his wife Jacque, purchased the business in 1985 from Howard and Roy and have continued to operate the business with the same goals and energies of its founders.

Congratulations Jim & Jacque Balmain of Smith's Bakeries for recognition as Distinguished Citizens hosted by the Greater California Council, Scouting America! Festivities were held at Luigi's that included Mayor Karen Goh presenting the Balmains with a Key to the City! We celebrate their lifelong commitment as they continue to make a lasting impact on the Bakersfield Community.

A BIG THANK YOU to our exceptional employees including bakers, decorators, and staff for their contributions and team effort. We were honored to have Mayor Karen K. Goh of the City of Bakersfield proclaim JIM BALMAIN DAY on September 30, 2025 in her presentation during our employee appreciation event. SINCERE THANKS to the community and our loyal customers for making Smith’s Bakeries a family tradition with generations served.
