Happy Columbus Day

As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, NIAF reflects on the voyage that came nearly three centuries before the nation’s founding. We believe Columbus’ courageous journey was the catalyst for more than 500 years of immigration to the Americas by people from every corner of the Earth, all seeking a better life for their families. For this reason, Columbus Day belongs not only to Italian Americans, but to all Americans.

The holiday also carries its own history for our community. President Benjamin Harrison proclaimed the first national observance in 1892, one year after 11 Italian immigrants were lynched in New Orleans. For generations since, it has been a day of recognition for the Italian Americans who helped build this country.

NIAF is a proud Supporting Partner of America250, honoring the generations of Italian Americans who have shaped our nation through leadership, service, and perseverance.
