Summer Camp 2021: APC to Zoo Atlanta 🏠✍🏽 📖🦒🐊🐦
Last month, from July 12-16th, the Atlanta Preservation Center welcomed 20 elementary-age students from the City of Refuge, in collaboration with a number of wonderful community and preservation partners.
For these five days, the children learned and explored in and around Grant Park. While outdoors, they visited historic spots in Grant Park such as the Milledge Fountain and Constitution Spring and learned how to identify the ten most common birds in Georgia through bird watching in the park.
Each day, the campers visited a different section in Zoo Atlanta from the Asian Forest to the Scaly Slimy Spectacular. One of the highlights from the Zoo was an encounter with a Blue-Tongued Skink named Reggie.
During their time at the APC, we talked about the importance of preservation and architecture in Atlanta and our community through conversation, arts, and crafts.
None of this would have been possible without our incredible and generous partners, as well as professor and APC board member Danielle Willkens. Thank you Zoo Atlanta, Georgia Audubon, City of Refuge, Ria's Bluebird, Grant Park Neighborhood Association (GPNA), Grant Park Coffeehouse, Trees Atlanta, Plaza Atlanta, and Jacqueline P. Lanham Designs, Inc.
Service Day and Community Outreach at Washington Park. The Atlanta Preservation Center partnered with The Conservancy at Historic Washington Park, Georgia Audubon, Park Pride, The Office of Michael Julian Bond, and the Atlanta Humane Society for a day of service at one of Atlanta's historic public parks.
Thank you to CJ Jackson with Washington Park, Ellen Bruenderman with Park Pride, Zaria Dyer and Corina Newsome with the Georgia Audubon for leading these community efforts.
A special thank you to Ria's Bluebird and Grant Park Coffeehouse for providing biscuits, cookies, muffins, and more.
