Memorial Day has become an annual tradition for us at Great Harvest because this day means something deeply personal to our family.
We come from a proud military family. Every immediate male member of my family served in the military - my father, stepfather, brother, and both grandfathers - representing nearly every branch of service over the years. Service, sacrifice, patriotism, and commitment to others were values woven into the way I was raised.
But Memorial Day also became personal to me in another way.
In 2019, while I was returning home from Montana training to finalize the purchase of the Arvada bakery, my dad called me to talk about the bakery and how excited he was for this new chapter. I was exhausted after driving through the night and almost didn’t answer the phone.
Thankfully, I did.
During that conversation, he told me how excited he was to come visit the bakery and asked if I was going to make lemon bars because they were his favorite dessert.
At the time, we didn’t even make lemon bars. But I told him, “We will now.”
The next morning - Memorial Day - my dad unexpectedly passed away.
That conversation became our last.
Ever since then, our lemon bars have been a tribute to him, and every Memorial Day we pause to remember not only him, but all those who served, sacrificed, and the families who carry those stories forward.
Today, we’d love to hear about a special veteran in your life.
Share their name, story, or memory in the comments below, and we’ll send you a coupon for 50% OFF a loaf of bread or sandwich of your choice as a small thank-you for helping us honor them.
Thank you to all military members, veterans, and military families. Your sacrifices are not forgotten.
