When I first started out, I did what many other cake makers do: try to please everyone. I learned every design and copied any picture anyone brought me. I found myself getting price shoppers, making cakes I didn’t even like, and honestly, bored.

It wasn’t until I found my style that I became an actual designer. Doors opened up for me, and I even got my first magazine cover! When that issue came out many many years ago, a planner friend said to me, “I took one look at that cover and knew it was yours”

That was a pivotal moment in my career.

From there, I began designing original works for my couples. This led to getting referrals for my style, becoming irreplaceable, avoiding price shoppers, and best of all, feeling fulfilled as an artist.

Developing your style is one of the four pillars of positioning yourself to gain quality referrals so that you can get the leads that are ready to book you before they even meet you. This is the key to longevity and profitability, as well as just being happier doing what we love!

If you aren’t getting the bookings you want, I hate to break it to you, it’s not the economy. Or the industry. Or even the clients. You may have a marketing problem. See, marketing your wedding cakes is more than having a pretty website and posting on social media.

Wedding cake sales are a one time sale, every time. We are constantly reaching clients that don’t know us yet , so we have to work harder to establish the trust needed. I found a way around that- it’s being the first to be referred by another wedding pro.
