It would be an immensely rewarding experience simply to work with passionate craftspeople every day. Who just cared deeply about the quality of the products that are set on the shelf for you, and left it at that.

How incredibly lucky are we then, to not only be surrounded by humans who pour their hearts into what we make, but also uphold an abiding belief that there’s more to all of this than just great tasting food.

snow on daffodils, gales, lightning storms and humidity like mid summer, this April has offered up a true variety platter while we prepare for the season ahead.

it’s time for oven wood delivery - garden clean up - farmers’ market site prep - pavilion clearing and pizza night preparation. every day is packed in the unique anticipatory way special to this time of year.

Sugaring season went in a flash, but our barrels worth is stashed away for the coming year thanks to Peter and Debbie Rhoades who’ve been making syrup a couple miles from here for decades and supplying us since year 1. The real, tangible value of connections like this can’t be overstated, they are a key ingredient in what give places a soul. 💛

Just because we’re three weeks away from opening day and a couple weeks from , doesn’t mean we’re hitting snooze on Saturday mornings. It’s still spring after all!

We’re curating bake at home pizza kits, filling the pastry case with inventive flavors like Thai Tea twice baked, lemon blueberry pound cake and the fridge with housemade goodies like zhoug, hummus, harissa red pepper spread and so many others.

All the while clinging to the perhaps naive idea that if we just keep being kind, sending love and care into the world through everything we do, then… I don’t know, maybe despite evidence these days to the contrary, the collective reservoir of hope rises?

One certainty is that a portion of all pizza kit sales go to .for.ukraine, a group of bakers who define this ideal as purely as any.

Left with the choice to write a simple menu post or this snippet from the April newsletter, the entrepreneur on one shoulder is screaming “tell everyone about the Easter goodies, the extra special pastries and the take home pizza kits, all of which will fill every shelf, table and rack in the bakery tomorrow.”

The fellow on my other shoulder says it’s fine to rely on your good judgment and the fact that at this point you know and expect all of that and more from us, and instead share a sentence or two about what’s behind the flurry of activity that marked this and every week at the bakery.

A recent interview with Jose Andres, founder of and an uplifting voice any time one is in need of inspiration, made what has otherwise been a really challenging time and turned my attention away from the madness and towards small actions every day that plant seeds of hope.

This message echoes through most of what you find here, but my faith that encounters in real life with other people are among the most essential counters we have to overwhelm and hopelessness. Come up and see whether it’s true or not, things are going to be hopping this weekend. Even if it’s not, the chocolate eclairs we’re making will make the drive worthwhile.

Just because it’s everywhere and we’ll be contending with it for weeks to come, do we have to call this Mud Season?
For instance “high tunnel salad season” has a nice ring to it, no? And Steppingstone Commons just brought us 24 bags of these beauties.

Or, since we’ll be pairing these greens with our take home pizza kits all of April, maybe we can dub it “Pizza Night Preseason” 🤔

The sign might only be up for a couple weeks, but the statement is universally true, today and all the rest of ‘em too.

Today’s menu? It’s long, and fabulous for sure, but some of the highlights are:

• Orange curd square with candied blood orange

• Toasted Sesame honey twice baked

• Spinach and artichoke pull apart

• Roasted potato and cheddar rolled in spicy cornmeal

• 100% whole grain, fresh milled russian rye.

Not one of these are to be missed. Shovel that snow and get over here alright? 👈🏼 💛

February came in cold and has stayed so. I know how this wears a lot of folks down and makes a troubled time feel even more trying. But let’s do our very best to .. b e h e r e n o w ..

Which means dealing with discomfort with as much grace as we can, offering each other grace because life is not easy, and remembering that wherever we find ourselves, at a jubilant peak with extra to give, or struggling through each day and feeling empty, we have been helped by so many, known and unknown, to get where we are.

Generosity got us here, and generosity will get us through.

I’m not a grand solutions kind of thinker, so I find genuine respite in a lovely handwritten envelope that arrives in the mail, or a stunning cake captured perfectly in the sunlight of a frozen winter day by .

It’s almost always little things, not big splashy ones, that provide the energy to show up for ourselves and others. So keep finding what sustains you every day and build that foundation for a long journey. We need everyone arm in arm right now.

Is it bad to admit that I have NO idea how a post on here sometimes reaches many thousands and very often just a few hundred?

Oh well, yesterday’s post struck a cord I guess, hopefully some of you stick around and see what we’re up to, but as a true believer in the power of IRL - sure, Ireland too, but mostly I’m talking about being together in the flesh 😜- I’m ducking back out of digital for a few and back to real life in a moment.
