“Oh Jupiters!”
My name is Katy Kauffman and I am the wife of a teacher and mom to two awesome and very active kiddos. My background is in Dietetics and Nutrition with a side of Culinary Arts. I love art, design, and a good story. Especially the story of how this little home bakery got its name, which I know is an unusual one. My signature cookie recipe is the “family recipe” that my grandmother modified from an old spritz cookie recipe. She turned it into a rolled dough that she would cut into shapes and sprinkle with sanding sugar and mail to each family member at every holiday known to mankind. Even when we went to college, all the grands knew a package near a holiday meant grandmas cookies. She passed away about two years ago now, just before I started thinking about opening a home bakery. So I wanted to honor her with the name of my business. I considered several phrases, but it came down to really wanting the name to make anyone who knew her instantly think of her. “Oh Jupiters!” was her “dangit!” Phrase. And quite frankly I can’t think of many times that I cooked or baked with her that it didn’t fly at least once! ;) But more than that it’s a reminder to me not only of her but also of that “what-have-I-done” moment that happens to me every time I create a work of edible art. In fact, from talking to other artists, its a pretty common feeling. That moment when you look at your work and go “This looks awful! It’s irreparably messed up! I’m never going to be able to fix this” But if you just keep going, adding another layer of icing or a few sprinkles, inevitably it all comes right in the end. She was always telling me not to worry so much. That everything would work it and not to be so hard on myself. So the name is a tribute to her. On many levels. It's my hope that the name and the story behind it will leave you with a smile just like it does for me and remind us all that life is too short to take too seriously.
