Seven years ago (as of Sunday) we opened our doors in Alameda. It’s very much in my nature to forget anniversaries and birthdays, but I didn’t want this one to get too far away from me without acknowledging the hard work that goes into this place every single day by so many people that I hold very dear. There isn’t an easy job in the place - everyone works their butts off, and they have done so under the most unusual of circumstances these past few years.

I’m not going to sit here and say that it’s a good thing that these Hot Cross Buns are only available on weekends from now until Easter, but in the age of same-day delivery, sometimes it is refreshing to be held by the restraints of time and tradition.

Anyway, now you have all the info you need if you want to get your hands on one! I certainly do…

No filter can capture the incandescent beauty of this Caramel Pear Almond Cake (Gateau William, as I dub it for my son and my dad, who are both big fans). It is delicious today, but the crunchy caramel top will soften overnight, so it’s tomorrow’s dream breakfast. Don’t sleep on this - we only made 6, and I am tempted to buy one for myself!

And don’t accuse me of forgetting about Pi Day! A second post to follow in order to show off our selection for this weekend.

Galette des Rois, a French cake for Epiphany, is a special treat that we don’t always make - but we had several requests this week, so we decided to go for it! Ours has almond cream and candied orange peel sandwiched between two puff pastry discs. I must say, it’s very good!

We have a couple available for sale today, and if you’d like to order one, we will make them all January, so give us a call and place an order.

As hectic as this season is for me, there are few things that give me more joy than the result of all our planning, ordering, and frantic producing for Thanksgiving.

If you’d like to order pies and bread from us this year, we’d be delighted. Our website has the ordering page up, and all pickups are for Wednesday, 11/24. If there’s anything else we can do for you this month, give us a call and we’ll try our darndest!

Bear with me for a newsy post!
1. We are delighted that CA is reopening; at this time we are still going to operate out of our windows, mostly due to the fact that we have used our cafe area for overflow storage for a year, and we need to get on that cleanup effort! We will reopen as soon as we are ready.
2. Father’s Day ordering is up on our website! This will be the last time we do our online weekend orders, at least until the holidays are here again!
3. We will have a brief closure on June 22-23, back open on Thursday the 24th. Just a quick breather after a heck of a year!
4. Weddings are happening! We still have capacity for wedding cakes this summer, but are filling up fast, so give us a call.

Ok, this may not have been the worst thing we’ve made...

This Goat Cheese and Tomato Tart started as a huge mistake - a certain baker *ahem* realized that she left the baking powder out of the cheddar scone dough, after scooping two whole batches. Faced with losing the lot, we decided to try to convert it into the world’s most labor-intensive crust! Some oven-roasted tomatoes and tangy goat cheese, along with our quiche batter, yielded this new staff favorite, though let me tell you, this is an extremely limited product! We’ll have a few this weekend and next.

The Alameda Health System Foundation hosted its first in-person outdoor holiday celebration on 7 December 2021 at The Overlook at the Port Workspaces in Oakland, CA. We were thrilled to finally reconnect with our AHS colleagues, friends, and supporters. It was wonderful to connect with so many of the colleagues that we see regularly on Zoom. Many of the connections made during the event highlight further opportunities to partner across our community to advance health equity. We are grateful to everyone who came to our event.

We want to express our gratitude to the staff @ The Port Workspaces, The RedDoor Catering, and Crispian Bakery for making our event a safe and tasty one. And thanks to everyone who donated to the AHS Adopt-a-Family fundraiser, raising money for the AHS patient families.

Alameda Family Services is incredibly grateful for the success of our Chef’s Kitchen spring series. We first want to thank our amazing chefs, Beth Woulfe of Crispian Bakery, Rudy Duran of C'era Una Volta, and Saboor Zafari of Angelas. Delicious!

We would also like to say thank you to our truly wonderful sponsors: Kelly Lux - State Farm Agent, the Matarrese Brothers, Greg Canales from Studio Alchemy, and Kate McCaffrey #1 Real Estate Agent in Alameda Since 2014. It was only with their very generous support that these events were possible.
