The Palmer House Brownie is more than just a dessert; it’s a piece of Chicago history born from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition.

Legend has it that Bertha Palmer, a prominent socialite and wife of the hotel's owner, tasked the pastry chef with creating a "cake-like" treat that was smaller than a piece of pie and easy to carry in boxed lunches for the fair’s visitors.

The result was a dense, fudgy masterpiece that eventually became the world’s first brownie.

What makes the original 1893 recipe unique—and why it’s still served at the hotel today—is its signature apricot glaze and crushed walnuts. Unlike modern brownies, which can be airy or cakey, the Palmer House version is famously gooey and rich.

Visiting the hotel’s Lockwood Restaurant to try one is a "bucket list" experience for foodies, offering a literal taste of the Gilded Age right in the heart of the Loop.

What started as a road trip… turned into something so much more.

I left home on March 20, not really knowing what I was looking for—just knowing I needed to go. Since then, I’ve traveled through Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado… seeing some of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever experienced. From quiet sunrises to snowy mountains, desert views to hot springs—every stop has been unforgettable.

But the most meaningful part of this journey hasn’t just been the places… it’s been the people, the moments, and the healing along the way.

Some days have been full of peace, others full of emotion—but every mile has helped me find pieces of myself again. I’ve laughed with strangers who became friends, shared meals when I didn’t want to sit alone, and felt Mike with me through it all.

This trip reminded me that even in loss, there is still beauty… still connection… still life to be lived.

I’m not the same person I was when I left—and that’s okay. I’m stronger, softer, and learning to embrace whatever comes next.

One mile at a time… I’m finding my way. ❤️

P.S. if these look a little out of order… 😂

They probably are! This post goes back to the beginning of my trip when I first headed to Oklahoma.

So far, I’ve made my way through Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico—where I stayed in Tucumcari and Albuquerque—and now I’m in beautiful Sedona, Arizona ❤️

Every stop has been a new adventure, and I’m just taking it all in one mile at a time.

More to come… ✨
