Short answer: NO. It is not compulsory.
Fruit cake became popular for weddings years ago because it lasts long, handles heat well, and stays stable for tall cakes. That made sense back then.
But times have changed.
Today, many weddings use:
• Vanilla sponge
• Chocolate cake
• Red velvet
• Carrot cake
• Marble cake
• Even a mix of dummy tiers + one real cutting cake
So why do some bakers still insist on fruit cake?
Because fruit cake is:
✔️ Very stable
✔️ Less likely to spoil in heat
✔️ Good for long outdoor events
But here’s the professional truth 👇🏽
A wedding cake should be what the couple enjoys eating, not just what tradition says.
If the venue is air-conditioned, the event is short, and the couple prefers soft cakes, then fruit cake is not a must.
As bakers, our job is to:
• Educate our clients.
• Guide them based on their event.
• Respect their taste and preference.
📌 Tradition is optional. Good cake is not.
