What's the story behind this cake?
I've always read about other baker's experiences with persons ordering cakes and not collecting but never thought about it happening to me. Today, for the first time since I started this business almost over a year ago, it has happened to me.
Normally, I ask first time customers to pay atleast 50% downpayment on an order but decided to waive that since COVID-19 happened. I was trying to reduce interaction with clients as much as possible, except for deliveries (I have a toddler) as well as was very considerate to the fact that I didn't want customers to have to risk themselves to line up at banks just to pay a deposit.
This customer contacted me almost a month ago to book a cake for today, which was her birthday. I took her details and mentioned to her about my waiver, once she can guarantee that she will not cancel at the last minute. I confirmed with her on Monday, when she indicated that she would like the cake for Wednesday instead. I hesitantly agreed to deliver for 5pm on Wednesday evening. At the last minute she indicated that she was at work and could not collect the cake. She asked to deliver early on Thursday morning. I agreed once again and asked her to confirm delivery time and location.
I got no response but assumed that she was busy and would respond when she can. I tried calling her from 7.30am this morning...no answer. I tried another 5 times...no answer. I messaged on Instagram and Facebook...no answer. I messaged on WhatsApp..."someone" responded with a message that said they found her phone and had been waiting for her to collect. My heart went soft for a moment but then quickly made sense of the situation...my business page is a PUBLIC page. She could have gotten my number using anyone's account to call and explain her situation. I am very understanding.
This was a lesson I learnt hard. There will be new rules and policies moving forward. Anyone who knows me knows that I put my heart and soul into my creations and go out of my way to make sure the customer is satisfied. I am deeply disappointed....in myself for allowing this to happen.
