Here with our favourite auntie and uncle who make the most delicious meepok (fishball noodles).

The lockdown and heightened alerts have been tough on our frontline community whom despite their fears, anxiety and at times unwarranted discrimination, have continued to persevere and carry on their work to bring normality to our daily lives.

58 Lengkok Bahru Minced Meat Noodle

It was an unexpected visit cuz I had to drop my wife in the area for work. My original intent was to visit Lengkok Bahru HC when I stumbled upon this.

At first look, it looks non-descript but it also says alot when the coffee shop only has the BCM stall and the kopi stall.

Prices are between $3.50-$5.50. I went for the middle and what you get are a nicely bowled bowl of noodles and piping hot soup.

Let’s do soup first. It’s traditional fishball noodle soup. Unmistakable. Compared to the richly flavoured tipo or ikan bilis or pork base soups, this is light yet I couldn’t stop drinking. The sprinkle of spring onions on top was refreshing too.

料 is a hybrid of fishball and minced meat noodle. No mushrooms, lard or vinegar. Noodle is powered by pure chilli that you can bring to another level with a mouthful of soup.

What I liked especially were the heekiao and lean meat. The former was juicy and had pretty good bounce when you exert force when giapping with the chopstick. I knew then it was good stuff as I gulped it.

The lean meat isn’t the usual kind that’s thinly sliced before tenderised. They are pre-prepared (meaning not cooked with the soup) chunks of porky goodness. Yea, chunks. As what you’d get in mutton soup. Idk the prep process cuz the food is served to table, but I could detect a trace of Chinese herb as I chewed. Good good stuff.

My only feedback is that my meepok portion was quite small for medium order. It filled 2 spoons and then all gone. But I beo the neighbour kuay teow like got more. If this isn’t a kitchen accident then next time must remember to 加面. Oh yeah, and egg too which some other reviews mentioned.

PS1: As loyal readers would know, I’m not particular about histories, just taste. So for those who like a casual read on that, this is Miss Tam Chiak’s write-up on more of the stall’s background - https://www.misstamchiak.com/58-lengkok-bahru-minced-meat-noodle/

PS2: The dapao crowd is full of ninjas. Be prepared to wait even though it may look like no queue.
