I grew up in Penang, and moved to Singapore when I was about 6 years old. Being from a Peranakan household, I have been deeply influenced by my maternal grandmother and auntie. Both are excellent cooks and teachers. They taught me how to give life to the best ingredients, how to refine my palate & tastes, and how to be 'feel' your food that you create. When I taste their food, I always feel loved. That’s how I want my food to be…

My cooking today is a tribute to my maternal grandmother and my wonderful Auntie/Nanny. I love to cook, to give and to share because in giving, I receive. Private catering from my home kitchen is a tradition that is passed down to me from my great-grandmother to my grandmother, to my auntie and now it's my turn to do the same.

HomemADE Cai Buay (菜尾)is basically Leftovers Stew/Soup. It’s a home style rustic home dish that we make in Penang when we have roast meat leftovers. In this instance, I had leftover roast duck, and I threw them into my big soup pot to cook with Kiam Chye, chopped kailan vege, lemongrass, lots of dried chilli, and tamarind paste as the sour ingredient. The roasted duck gives it a big flavour boost but what I truly love to eat is the vegetables inside.

This soup is spicy from the chillies, tangy from the tamarind, and salty from the preserved mustard greens. It packs a big flavour punch and is really awesome as it keeps simmering. It’s even better the next day!

I had very fresh yummy mackerel fish at hand, and I had a hankering for homemAde Nasi Ulam. Thankfully I managed to get most of the local herbs that goes into preparing it. There’re extra 3-4 herbs that my grandma used to add into it too but these herbs while readily available in Penang, aren’t so common here in Singapore.

After lots and lots of fine chopping, mixing and tossing, my Nasi Ulam is finally ready. I understand why people charge an arm and an leg for this dish. It’s really a pain in the a** to cook. But eating it is pure pleasure for me. So sedap!

The real bonus of cooking this? Feeling close to late grandma again… I hope I’ve made you proud Ah Ma! 🙏🏼
