A hedge of pretty bunga telang grows along the outside of my rented place in a traditional Balinese house, so I picked a few buds to make a no-bake Cheesecake Pelangi with some dragonfruit and mango leftover from breakfast. The natural colours are quite muted as expected but the cake still turned out a few delighted squeals from the ladies during the cutting.

I ventured out in my new neighbourhood on foot in search of the next exciting meal. Stumbling upon a tiny makeshift warung, I had my first bowl of scaldingly rich Soto Betawi. Originating from the Betawi people in Jakarta, this popular streetside meal is traditionally braised with beef and offal in a myriad of herbs and spices and enriched with coconut milk. This warung’s version is creamy with beef fat, but very cleverly lifted by the fresh tomatoes and a thoughtful wedge of kaffir lime that you squeeze in halfway through to help cut through the richness. Perfect for demolishing a whole portion of white rice.

Today was a crazy hectic day so here’s a late post of - a little bird told the chef that I find it hard to eat things shaped like mini trees, i.e. broccoli but am ok with zucchini, coz they are shaped like little moons. So guess what’s for lunch today? Broccoli pasta. But I ate it all. Super-delish al dente (I know I’m repeating myself a lot lately) shells in place of the more traditional orecchiette, broccoli cooked to a verdant mush (in the best possible way), shaved pecorino. And to rub my face in my seemingly ridiculous food fears, an additional side of grilled asparagus spears drizzled with crema balsamico de modena and evoo was served.

Today’s italiano lunch was fork-tender poached salmon on a bed of baby french beans, spinach and carrots and a rich cream sauce, with a side of nasi kunyit nestled close, a picturesque reminder of how colourful life in Bali really could be.

Hands down best Kouign Aman ever. The coffee here is strong and consistently good, as is the energy of the folks here. Starting my morning at Arouna’s is always a good sign nothing much can weather me down today.

Free(dom) Drop Cookies

Clearing the freezer, hence these fat-free, sugar-free, gluten-free drop cookies for breakfast. Three ripe-to-the-edge-of-the-bin bananas, an egg, a handful of raisins, a dash of cinnamon and baking soda, 1/2 cup of steel-cut oats and enough cassava flour to make a thick batter. Leave to stand for 15 minutes to thicken some more. Drop tablespoons of batter on a lined tray and bake at 180 for 15 minutes until golden. These are great for kids and folks watching their diet. Told a chef friend who was working on a keto recipe yesterday that my magic is really in butter, cream and sugar, but hey, these cookies are not bad. Take my word for it.

Yesterday I was agreeing heartily with my Gojek driver about the indisputably best combo in life - a roll of garam (to***co) and a cup of kopi o kosong, first thing in the morning. This morning I had a bit of a culture shock at breakfast when I realised kopi o kosong meant vastly different things where we came from. Say hello to my first Balinese coffee, kopi tubruk, served Turkish style, complete with grounds and all. A very robust Robusta blend, thick and strong and woody, that threatened to grow hair on my tongue. Now the question begs - those dregs, to drink or not to drink?

What I ate in Bali today - mie bakso urat sapi. Big bouncy beef balls with bits of tendon in a savoury broth and served alongside yellow noodles laced with crispy fried shallots and their aromatic oil. But I’m really here for the fiery sambal on the table. Help yourself but be warned, a little goes a very long way.

My first bake in Bali - paleo-friendly chocolate chip cookies. Ok technically the first bake were no-fry croquettes that made use of leftover potato salad, but that was, what do you call that, just to 开锅? What’s paleo? Some call it the cavemen diet. Basically it’s free of ingredients that were not available before the age of food-processing - no refined sugars, dairy, grains etc, but I have no idea why this recipe asked for baking powder and baking soda, weren’t those produced after the food processing age too?? Always thought cavemen had strong teeth to chomp through all those dense bakes. And only grass-fed butter is used, coz grain-fed cows not paleo duh. I went a step further to brown the butter, scrape up all the charred milk solids and added a tablespoon of water to make up for the moisture loss. This recipe explains everything else really clearly though, kudos. You might be tempted to reduce the honey/sugar, but don’t go crazy on it; I did and the cookies didn’t spread as much as I would like.

My first Arrack Attack, my first taste of Arrack anything really. Not to be confused with Arak, the anise-flavoured one, this is also called the rum of Southeast Asia, since it’s made from sugarcane. Was it as araklicious as I was led to believe? Sadly no. The cocktail was a good attempt at a bootleg daiquiri but there was an aftertaste I couldn’t quite put my finger on, a slight funk that didn’t grow on me so I gave up mid-drink.

EDIT: This was STRONG. After abandoning half my drink, I paid the bill, strolled down the beach and then dialled a Gojek. While waiting outside the club, my lips started buzzing pleasantly and I found myself bopping happily to the EDM booming from inside the club, and continued bopping in the cab when the driver pak immediately put on some Kpop (Zoom in, Zoom out!) for me (the fake Korean tourist, Annyeong!)

My ketumbar bloomed! Got this droopy pot of coriander from the supermarket in my first week and didn’t think we were going to make it but we did. Have a nice herb garden coming along outside my room now. Here in Bali, all the household food waste is collected for composting and in return, the composting guy gives us free organic compost to grow our greens, which is just another beautiful aspect of sustainable living I love about Bali.

Get ready to write this place down in your notebooks, ladies and gentlemen. The Korean scrambled egg is the single most flavourful bite I’ve had in Bali in nearly 3 weeks. I need to write it all down lest a single detail escapes my taste memories. Visually it looked like a literal interpretation of farm-to-table, but the aroma wafting up from the warm dish was ARRESTING. A bed of tenderly cooked eggs, topped with kimchi aged to perfect piquancy and creamy mayo with just a hint of…gochujang, perhaps? Minced beef braised to the brink of caramelisation, almost bakkwa-esque, with a warm kick of black pepper, then smokiness from a generous sprinkling of toasted and crushed black sesame seeds, umami from big flakes of seaweed (like the ones in 5-cent packets we used to eat as kids), crisp lettuce and a lightly pickled slaw of daikon to cut through all of that greatness. The slices of fluffy, pan-toasted sourdough bread were great for mopping up every last drop of flavour but also amazing on their own. Was this a sharing plates kinda place, as I’ve been told? Perhaps. Did I demolish an entire dish alone in one sitting? Burp.

Read this menu online and it sounded promising so I’m mighty glad it exceeded my expectations. Ordered an iced black and the crew asked if I wanted an Americano or a long black. Long black, of course. Can we please cheer for a place that pours your espresso shots over your iced water at the table? 👏🏻👏🏻 I arrived about half past 11 and beat the lunch crowd. No reservations, hence the long queue outside the resto on a Monday. Don’t think they are dog-friendly but the house dog Benny and his pal were inside the space just chillin’.
