Last night, I dreamt of Yeye.

He was in the kitchen again, patiently preparing my favourite “GOI BUI”（Hainanese Chicken Rice）. The aroma felt so real — warm, comforting, just like at our old home.

And just like always, he saved the juiciest drumstick for me🍗

Love that seems so close yet so far.
It’s been 35 years, Yeye …

💪🏻I decide for my own destiny!💪🏻

Mum said when I turned one, during my “Zhua Zhou” ceremony, Yeye laid out a wholesome tray full of “future career possibilities” ✨

Some symbolised wisdom, some represented Wealth while others carried wishes of Peace and Happiness.

And there I was, just a tiny little me— the moment I reached out my hand, I went straight for:
🐓Hainanese Steamed Chicken Drumstick 🍗

My grandfather laughed and said “In the future, my cutie pie will be in the F&B line with endless good food waiting for you!”

When I grow up for the sweetest memory,
my all-time favourite at The Hainan Story is always the Hainanese Chicken Drumstick 🍗❤️

“edible map”of Hainanese history. It bridges the gap between European pastry techniques and Southeast Asian ingredients, telling a story of adaptation and survival.

Most Hainanese were the last major Chinese group to arrive in Singapore and Malaysia, they couldn’t enter the established trade or agriculture markets. Instead, they became the “master chefs” for the British.

The Swiss roll was a staple of British high tea. The British loved sponge cakes rolled with jam or cream. Hainanese cooks mastered this delicate “sponge” technique and enhanced their own cake recipes with Asian Flavours, that were passed down to generations after generations.
