Nicaraguan police arrested 80-year-old Bishop Emeritus Juan Abelardo Mata Guevara, SDB, while he was receiving medical treatment at a clinic.

The retired Bishop of Estelí was detained for several hours on June 29–30, 2026, shortly after celebrating Mass where he asked the faithful to pray for the persecuted Church in the country.

This latest incident highlights the ongoing harassment and repression against Catholic clergy under the Ortega regime. Bishop Mata, who recently turned 80, had already faced previous detentions and interrogations. He was eventually released, but the message is clear: voices of faith and solidarity are not welcome.

The Catholic Church in Nicaragua continues to suffer under systematic persecution — bishops imprisoned or exiled, priests arrested, churches monitored, and faithful intimidated — simply for proclaiming the Gospel and defending human dignity.
Let us pray:

For the immediate and complete freedom of all imprisoned clergy and laity.
For strength and protection for Bishop Abelardo Mata and all Nicaraguan bishops, priests, and religious.

For the conversion of hearts and an end to religious persecution.
That Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Joseph may intercede for peace and justice in Nicaragua. 🙏

Tried the pour over method for the Mountain of Peace Chocolate flavor.
A rookie in this coffee making process but the end result was so good!
The coffee was just right not too strong.
Added milk and sugar in the cup to suit my taste.
