Tahafuz

Tahafuz The ‘Tahafuz’ project aims to create a world free of the fear of sexual violence and assault. Our project aims to do this using a three strategies:

1.

Gender violence and sex related crimes in Pakistan are a grim reality. Pakistan’s law enforcement machinery is incapable of handling these cases due to weak legislation, religious influence on the standards of evidence required, an outdated court system and a general patriarchal mindset. However even with these challenges, majority of Pakistani women enjoy mobility and have personal and profession

al obligations which take them out of the sanctity of their house. Within the upper middle class of the urban areas there are women working professionals and students and in both rural and urban lower classes, we have women sometimes being the sole bread earner of their family. These women have to do these activities with the constant threat of being raped and harassed on the street. The social paradigms of this country make the victims of these attacks more at risk of social exile and suicide. Thus the threat of sexual harassment and/or rape is a very pressing issue in the lives of these women. What is ‘Tahafuz’?

‘Tahafuz’ aims to provide the women at risk of sex related crimes a first barrier of defense. A series of training workshops held every year in different areas of Pakistan which will teach women physical countermeasures and mindset training in case of grave physical assault.

2. A series of seminars to spread awareness about sex-related crimes against women and precautions that need to be taken within different communities of Pakistan.

3. Provide a ‘One-Stop-Shop’ for women seeking to buy defensive weaponry.

Learning to defend yourself is something Project Tahafuz stands for, but creating an environment for everyone to live safely should be the goal of society, regardless of gender.

Tahafuz salutes these two for their courage and fortitude!

We cycled from Islamabad to Khunjerab pass border of Pakistan and China and then back to Islamabad in 9 days. When we told our family about our trip, our siblings started laughing and called us crazy. Everyone mocked us but the hardest part was getting permission from our mothers and assuring them of our safety. It took 3 months for them to say yes! Before starting the trip, we learnt martial arts, first aid training and how to fix punctures. On the trip, we were mocked by many people in Punjab so we were scared of the treatment we might get in other areas. To our surprise, we were welcomed warmly everywhere we went. People encouraged us and were excited and happy for us. It was the best experience of our lives.

No female has ever done this type of expedition before in Pakistan. The reason behind it was to show the world that Pakistani girls are not weak. We wanted to break stereotypes and set an adventurous example for other females to let go of their fears and doubts. We wish to inspire females to join sports and promote tourism by showing that it’s quite safe. We thought cycling is the best way to travel and explore the country and the best tool we have to quench our thirst for adventure and stay healthy at the same time. Our message for everyone and especially for females is that champions are those who make their own legacy and illuminate their country's name with their achievements. Choose who you want to be and take risks to become that person!
