One of my fondest memories from Ramzan is the simple Iftar party hosted by nanijan. We would always look forward to those get togethers because it meant all the cousins gathering under one roof, endless games and giggles and the excitement of praying Maghrib together.
I remember how the dining table and centre tables were shoved to the corner and out came the traditional dastarkhwan running all the way from one end of the drawing room to the other end. There were no glittering star and crescent shaped fairy lights dangling from the ceiling, no Ramadan Mubarak banners propped up, no Ramadan decor whatsoever yet it it was all so festive and serene. A peacefully soothing ambiance untainted by pomp and show. Nanijan was never one for extravagance or clutter anyway, simplicity was her mantra. And why not!
All of us cousins would run to and fro, feeling important as we ran errands, fetching the dates and going back and forth with serving plates full of pakoras and samosas and chilled Roohafza tumblers from the kitchen and placing them in the middle.
Mischievous smiles and glances were passed around amongst us kids as the younger ones (non rozedaar) tried to grab a bite surreptitiously before the Azaan. What golden days! Our hearts were so full and our soul glowed with innocent contentment. If for some reason, someone was not fasting, no one felt the need to judge them or question them; there was a lot more tolerance and patience in those days.
The good thing about nanijan's demeanor was that she liked to keep everything simple. Women in those times maybe didn't feel the pressure for hosting to impress I guess. Or maybe they did, I really don't know. Its just that elaborate spreads where you're spoilt for choice were not so common in those days. And it wasn't even a matter of affordability. It was the simplicity of those times reflected in these little actions.
You didn't necessarily need to have an Instagram worthy heavily laden artistically decorated Iftar table just so you could click some pics and upload it.
These days, we on the other hand have made everything so difficult and cumbersome. The whole essence of enjoying an occasion is sometimes lost in translation when you get into nitty gritties. It is possible to throw a party and host your family without having to toil by the blazing stove the entire day. It is perfectly okay if you opt for a simpler menu and prefer to enjoy your own party too, dress up, laugh and chat with your guests instead of running around in panic mode.
I don't have any photos from those bachpan ki simple Iftar parties but the vivid imagery in my mind does a far better job than any camera could ever do.
Ramzan Mubarak everyone ❤
