This is the hide that belonged to a cow named Blossom who infected a milkmaid by the name of Sarah Nelmes with cowpox.⁣

In 1796, English Physician, Edward Jenner discovered the vaccination for smallpox by injecting puss from Nelmes' cowpox sore into an eight-year-old boy, and then attempting to infect him with smallpox six weeks later. The boy did not develop smallpox, indicating that the earlier exposure to cowpox protected him from infection.⁣

There's an old saying which dates much further back than the 18th century that says, "As clear as a milkmaid's skin." Milkmaids were often associated with beauty and smooth skin because they never had smallpox scars. This old saying was what inspired Jenner to suspect that cowpox and smallpox were somehow related.⁣

In the course of milking cows milkmaids would catch cowpox from infected udders and they would temporarily develop pustules on their arms and hands. This resolved after a few weeks and conveyed immunity to future infections of cowpox and the closely related smallpox virus. ⁣

The word vaccine is derived from the Latin word "v***a", which means "cow".⁣

Opponents say it is a risky shortcut that will increase the public's hesitancy about receiving a vaccine once one is available, partly because of the speed of the trials. If it's done quickly, many wonder, can it be done well? There's the issue of informed consent. Can a volunteer really give informed consent when there are so many unknowns about COVID-19? Clinicians say they would communicate the pros and cons should one of their patients ask about joining up.

Human challenge trials for a COVID-19 vaccine could speed development by months or more but could also place study volunteers at a much higher risk for complications and even death.
