Over the past years we’ve had quite a number of customers that have used the term LAYERED & TIERED interchangeably. However, we’d like to differentiate between the two:

•Layered Cake ( lei•urd )~ A layered cake is a cake made up of multiple stack sheets of cake with identical size. It can be a stack of 2 layers, stack of 3 layers and so forth. These stacked layers of cake are held together between a layer of filling or frosting.

•Tiered Cake ( /teerd/ ) ~ A tiered cake consists of multiple layered cakes of different sizes stacked on top of each other. Tiered cakes can be as high as 2 to 7 tiers or more depending on the type of structure to hold them all in place. Tiered cakes are traditionally common in weddings but are now also common with theme birthday cakes.

How to Cut a Square Cake

Cake is the best part of any celebration, however for those lucky ones tasked with cutting the cake, it can be stressful! Slicing nice, even pieces can be quite the feat, and if you’ve ever fretted about achieving cake-cutting glory, worry no more!

With this “How to Cut a Square Cake” cutting guide, we’ll show you how to cut and serve your square cake with ease. No more guessing – this method works no matter what size cake you’re cutting.

How to Cut a Square Cake:

1. Starting 2 in. from edge, cut a horizontal line across your cake.

2. Slice approximately 1 1/2 to 2 in. pieces of cake.
Serve this row first before continuing to cut.

3. Cut another horizontal line across the cake, 2 in. from edge.

4. Repeat the process, cutting 1 1/2 to 2 in. pieces, then serving them before cutting another horizontal line.

5. Continue this pattern until entire cake is cut.
This method also works for 9 x 13, 11 x 15 and 12 x 18 in. sheet cakes.

Here are a few additional tips and tricks to make slicing and serving a piece of cake!:

For dense cakes, rinse your knife in hot water after each slice to prevent the knife from sticking to or tearing up your cake

If you’re cutting a frosted cake, wipe your knife after each cut for nice, clean slices

To make even slices, use bakers’ twine or unflavored dental floss to divide your cake into even sections

To avoid slipping, place your cake on a grip mat before cutting
