HOW MUCH OF A TEACHER'S WORKING DAY IS ACTUALLY TEACHING? 👩‍🏫

We often think a teacher's job is simply “teaching,” but research tells a different story.

According to the latest OECD TALIS 2024, teachers spend only about 43% of their total working time actually teaching. The rest can include lesson planning, marking, administration, meetings, communication with parents and other responsibilities.

Interestingly, in some education systems, teachers spend more than half of their working time teaching, while in others, teaching takes up less than one-third.

Being a teacher isn't just about the hours spent in front of a classroom. A huge part of the profession happens behind the scenes.

What makes teachers happier at work?

Across different education systems, research points to a few things that matter: respect, trust, supportive leadership, manageable workloads, professional autonomy, and a healthy work-life balance.

The goal isn't to copy another country's education system, it’s to ask: What can our schools learn from places where teachers feel supported and valued?

🌿 A Weekend Reminder for Every Teacher

You do not have to be productive every minute of your weekend.

You do not have to finish every task. You do not have to prepare for next week. You do not have to feel guilty for sleeping in, staying home, watching your favorite show, spending time with family, or simply doing nothing.

Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is rest.

The classroom will still be there. The lesson plans can wait. The emails can wait.

But your body, your mind, and your heart need care too.

So this weekend, give yourself permission to slow down.

Sleep without an alarm. Put the laptop away. Enjoy your coffee. Laugh with the people you love. Take a walk. Do absolutely nothing for a while.

You spend so much of your time giving to others.
This weekend, give a little back to yourself.

You deserve a weekend that feels like a weekend.

Let's make today a Choose Day.
Choose kindness, even when it is easier to judge.
Choose patience, even when things do not go as planned.

And most importantly, choose to be gentle with yourself. You do not have to be perfect to make a difference.

Wherever you are in the world, you deserve to rest.

For some teachers, the school year has come to an end. The alarm clocks can finally be turned off, the lesson plans can wait, and the days ahead bring a well earned chance to slow down, recharge, and simply breathe.

For others, a new school year has just begun. New classrooms, new students, new routines, and new responsibilities are already calling. While the journey has only started, the need for rest has not disappeared.

Different calendars. Different seasons. The same dedication.

Whether you are beginning a new chapter or closing another, one thing remains true.

Teachers deserve rest.

Rest is not something you have to earn after reaching exhaustion. It is how you protect your health, renew your spirit, and continue giving your best to the students who count on you. So wherever you are in the world, and whatever your school calendar looks like, take time to pause this weekend.

Sleep a little longer. Enjoy a quiet moment. Spend time with the people you love. Do something that fills your cup.

You have worked hard. You are making a difference. And you deserve to rest.

A Gentle Reminder for Everyone

You never truly know what someone is going through.

Some may be tired, physically, mentally, or emotionally.

Some may be caring for a sick loved one.

Some may be grieving the loss of someone dear to them.

Some may be quietly battling an illness or carrying burdens they never speak about.

Some may be smiling on the outside while struggling on the inside.

Whether it is a student, a teacher, a parent, a colleague, or a stranger, let us choose kindness.
A kind word costs nothing. Patience costs nothing. A smile costs nothing.
But to someone who is having a difficult day, they could mean everything.

Be kind. Not because everyone is kind, but because everyone is fighting a battle we may never see.

You are doing more than you think.
The lesson that did not go perfectly. The student who seemed uninterested. The day that left you feeling exhausted.

None of these define your impact.
Some students may never say thank you. Some progress may take months or even years to see.
