This is a look back at everything (or most of what) I baked during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many of us, I somehow learned how to bake (mostly cakes and quick breads) during that time. It was July 2020 when I bought my first oven. My first attempt? Pandesal. They were nice and fluffy fresh out of the oven but the next day they turned hard as a rock. 😅 Then, the first cake I baked was an American yellow birthday cake with chocolate ganache frosting. It was a huge hit. From that point on, I baked more with curiosity and love. I loved how simple ingredients like eggs, butter, flour, and sugar could turn into something so good and joyful 🍰🍞

Someone asked, “Why Butter & Nonna?”

I was actually considering some other names for this home-based microbakery. Some of my choices were Reggie’s, Reyes and Fely’s (my mother’s name) but I thought they were too common already. For whatever reason, I even considered a Japanese name Daiki (which means great hope) like Daiki Bakery haha. Since last year, I’ve been inspired by the Japanese bakeries (I want to go back for bakery tour lol). Pero baka di ko mapanindigan ang Japanese theme. So I went back to thinking of other names related to baking.

Of course one of the first things that comes to our mind when we say baking is butter. So I thought about what I could pair with butter to make it sound more unique. Butter & Lola popped into my mind because our grandmothers hold such relatable memories for all of us. One of my favorite memories with my Lola was every time she would make us batirol or tsokolate out of cocoa tablets from the palengke. But then I found that there were already pages with the name Butter & Lola. So I opted for Nonna which is the Italian word for grandmother.
