Labor is the backbone of the Philippine economy. It is the primary social economic force that is the bloodline of our nationโs growth and success. Today, May 1st, we commemorate Labor Day, the annual celebration of the labor movement, and to honor the contributions and rights of the workers that build that economy.
Section 3, Article XIII of the 1987 Constitution guarantees the key rights of all workers: (1) to self-organization; (2) conduct collective bargaining and negotiations; (3) peaceful concerted activities, including the right to strike in accordance with law; (4) security of tenure; (5) humane work conditions; (6) a living wage; and (7) to participate in policy and decision-making processes affecting their rights and benefits as may be provided in law.
Today, as we celebrate the contributions of workers, we call on to the State, to uphold the same guarantees outlined in our Constitution. While our lawmakers, abandoning their posts yet still paid, our workers are still underpaid and overworked.
It is our right to not be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law, and to be equally protected by these same laws.
