Lilith's Bocarillo - a sweet glimpse of Southern Leyte
Southern Leyte, an Eastern Visayan province, is known to being the birthplace of Christianity in the Philippines. In an island called Limasawa, a municipality south of Southern Leyte, is where the first Christian mass was held in the country.
Maasin City, the capital of the province, is also considered the center of commerce and religion. Some of Leyte's famous tourist spots are located here. See list below, to name a few.
* The Lady of Assumption at the Jalleca Hills -- the tallest privately owned shrine in the Philippines
* Monte Cueva Shrine -- also known as the Shrine of Our Lady of the Assumption and the Most Precious Blood of Jesus
* Maasin Cathedral -- the seat of Diocese of Maasin which comprises the whole province of Southern Leyte and towns in (Northern) Leyte
* The Guinsohotan Cave
* Busay Falls
Aside from breathtaking sights to see, their local delicacies are also something to look forward to. With this, Lilith's got you covered.
Lilith's, a pasalubong place located on the heart of Maasin City, houses the best local delicacies in town. From salvaros (oval-shaped coconut crackers) to sortidos and rosquillos (flower-shaped cookies), they have it here, including the bocarillo.
Bocarillo is a sweet delicacy made from strips of coconut meat and sugar. It's similar to the bukayo but instead of palm sugar, refined sugar is being used. The addition of milk made it creamier and balances out the sweetness from the sugar. It also made the bukayo white in color, instead of the familiar caramel brown.
Lilith's Bocarillo is available in various flavours like pineapple, lemon, cheese, peanut, durian and langka but the plain one works for me.
Next time you visit Southern Leyte, don't forget to stop by Lilith's for your native sweet fix.
