FILIPINO BAKERY
(Brief History)

The Filipino Bakery was established in Gingoog in 1954 by the spouses, Lucrecio Brion Empalmado and Herminia Empeño Dionio, who hail from San Pablo City, Laguna. In 1953 Lucrecio, who was orphaned at the age of seven, had to live with his uncles, moving from one to another and to his baptismal godfather, and only attained Grade 7 level of education, was working as

a bus conductor at Luzon Bus Line, with routes from Manila to Northern Luzon, as far as Tuguegarao and Aparri. He only had time to go home to his family in San Pablo during his days off. Meanwhile, Herminia was taking care of the household and their six (6) children while also earning income by peddling jewelries, among others. During one of his days off, Lucrecio was invited by his compadre, Pinong Ticzon, to go to Mindanao and explore other means of livelihood. Surmising that his and his wife’s income will not suffice to provide their children higher education, Lucrecio discussed the matter with Herminia and then accepted the invitation. Lucrecio and Pinong travelled to Mindanao, visiting a number of towns and cities that people from San Pablo City had moved to. In Cagayan de Oro, they visited Dalisay Bakery, owned by Femio Dalisay, and observed its operation. Inspired by what he saw, Lucrecio decided to put up his own bakery. He and Pinong traveled further to map out where it would be suitable to start the business. They reached the town of Gingoog and found the people in the town friendly, hospitable, and helpful. Among the people he met were Filemon Gomez and Julio Ganaban. He also learned that the name Gingoog is a native word, which means GOODLUCK. He approached Filemon for a lease of the ground floor and mezzanine of a building that Filemon was having constructed on Rizal Street, where Lucrecio planned to situate the bakery. After reaching an agreement on the lease, Lucrecio went back to San Pablo and mortgaged their property there to raise capital for the bakery. In a wonderful coincidence, Lucrecio would later realize that the feast day of Gingoog’s patron saint, Sta. Rita de Casia, was on the same day as his and Herminia’s wedding anniversary. Filipino Bakery opened its doors on September 7, 1954, giving out bread for free. The following day, September 8, commercial operations started. In 1978, Filipino Bakery moved to its present location in the vicinity of the new Gingoog City Public Market at Doña Graciana Street, Barangay 20.
