| 🐷🍞 GENSAN STORIES #2: THE HEARTWARMING STORY BEHIND GENSAN’S LECHON BREAD
At first glance, it looks like a small lechon — complete with a snout, ears, legs and that unmistakable curly tail.
But look again. The whole thing is BREAD.
And behind this unusual creation of Jo-Ann's Bakeshop in General Santos City is a story that began with a simple birthday wish.
❤️ IT STARTED WITH A CHILD’S BIRTHDAY
According to Jo-Ann’s Bakeshop owner Ann Kho Noel, the Lechon Bread was developed by one of their bakers after a fellow baker requested something special for a child’s birthday because the family could not afford a real lechon.
So the baker made one — out of bread.
“For me, it started as a symbol of hope for something better,” Ms Ann shared. “Today, lechon bread muna, but someday, pag maka-afford na, real lechon na.”
🐷 HANDCRAFTED — NO HULMAHAN
What makes it even more remarkable is that the Lechon Bread isn’t made using a pig-shaped mold.
“It is handcrafted, no hulmahan — a celebration of creativity,” Ms Ann told Gensan News Online.
Each one is shaped by hand, from its body and legs to its ears, snout and curly tail.
The price? ₱170.
🍎 A SYMBOL OF HOPE AND ASPIRATIONS
Over time, customers have found their own creative ways of presenting the Lechon Bread.
Ms Ann says some customers use it as the centerpiece of their buffet table during Christmas and New Year, surrounding it with 12 or 13 fruits.
For her, these displays have become “symbols of hope and aspirations.”
What started as one baker’s creative way of making a child’s birthday celebration a little more special has become one of Jo-Ann’s Bakeshop’s most memorable creations in GenSan.
Sometimes, a simple loaf of bread can carry a much bigger story. ❤️
