The Fear of the Lord….The Bible says in the book of proverbs that It’s the beginning of wisdom. But it isn’t a fear in the sense that we should be cowering in a corner or hiding ourselves away from Him. It’s more a sense of awe and reverence at the awesome power of the creator of the Universe. King David begins this Psalm . ”The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.“ psalms 19 1-4.
I think that sense of awe at the vast power of God is where his idea of fear comes from. It’s a respect and submission to his creator.
Though King David was a very very rich man when he wrote this he also in this same Psalm says about God’s word ”They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.“
Psalms 19:10
The great Theologian Charles Spurgeon writes “He is wisest who reads both the world-book and the Word-book as two volumes of the same work, and feels concerning them, ‘My Father wrote them both.’”
The Apostle Paul wrote “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse”. Romans1-20.
The more we understand about biology and astronomy the more it should drive us towards God, not away from him. Charles Darwin, The Father of Evolutionary theory, that dominates our science text books to this day AND in my opinion is one of the main excuses people have for turning their back on God says of his own theory.
“If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed, which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down. But I can find out no such case”.
I think discoveries of DNA, RNA and the microbiology of the cell would all have given Darwin more than enough reason to dismiss his own theory. And yet, still, huge swathes of the global population deny the existence of God and deny him his creation.
God loves his creation and mankind as the pinnacle of his creation. John 3:16 tells us how much!! “For God so loved the World that he gave his one and only Son”. That means he loves you!! BUT his Patience, Love, Grace and Mercy are not endless. The day will come when the awesome power of God, creator of the Universe and everything in it, will come against humanity in Righteous and Holy Judgement. In that day the proud will be brought low, the mockers silenced, struck dumb with fear and the rebellious brought to their knees.
I reckon we would be wise to submit now, voluntarily and make right our account with God, than wait for that day!!
