Well… this is a post we’ve been putting off for a while.
After more than 50 years serving Marlborough, we’ve made the tough decision to close the retail butcher side of Renwick Meat Market & Bakery, on Friday 12 June.
Before anyone panics - the bakery isn’t going anywhere. The pies will still be rolling out of the ovens, the custard squares will still disappear faster than we can make them, and we’ll continue operating our busy homekill and meat processing side of the business too. The front door will still be open, and we will still be here if anyone wants to pop in for a yarn.
For those who don’t know the story, Renwick Meat Market was started back in 1972 by Graham and Bev Adcock, before being taken over by us, alongside our partners, kids, and an incredible bunch of staff over the years. It’s never really just been a business to us - it’s been a huge part of our family’s life and, hopefully, a small part of yours too.
After more than 40 years in the trade, we reckoned it was time for a change. Running a business has been a big part of our lives for decades, and we've loved every minute of it. But there comes a point where you start taking stock of things, and for us, it felt like the right time to ease off the accelerator a little.
Over the past few years we've talked a lot about slowing down, but life has a habit of getting in the way. Grandchildren arrived and started growing up far too quickly, Covid came along, and like everyone, we've had to say goodbye to friends and family members far too soon. Through it all, we've been reminded that time is precious. We're fortunate to still have mum and dad at home, and we'd like to keep it that way for as long as possible.
All of this is to say that this decision hasn't been made lightly. There isn't one big reason behind it - just a lot of small reasons all leading us in the same direction.
What we are incredibly grateful for is the support this community has shown us over the decades. There’s been plenty of laughs, plenty of banter and more stories shared over the counter than we can count. We’ve always tried to look after people where we could, and we’ll still be here - just in a slightly different way.
To our amazing staff - thank you. We honestly couldn’t have done it without you. The good news is no one will be losing their jobs. The business is still flat out, and our team will continue helping across the bakery and processing side.
We know a lot of people will be disappointed, and we’re sorry for that. But we also know this is the right decision for our family and our team.
And finally - thank you to all our customers, from Renwick, Marlborough and further afield. Whether you popped in for a few sausages, trusted us with your Christmas ham orders, or rushed in first thing in the morning for some bacon for brekkie, thank you. We've met some great people, shared plenty of laughs, and while the retail butcher is closing, we'll still be here, still part of the community, and still doing what we do best.
