Whānau, this is one of the hardest posts we’ve ever had to write.
After a lot of thought, meetings, and tears, we have made the decision to close our doors. Our last day of trading will be next Sunday 21st December.
When we opened Pepe’s Café, our dream was simple: to bring something different to our community - flavours from home, made with love, quality, and pride. Even though we didn’t reach every hope and dream we had for this little shop, we know we achieved that, and for that, we are incredibly proud.
To our community and loyal customers: thank you for raising us, supporting us, and believing in our vision. Every kind message, every order, every shoutout kept us going far longer than we ever expected.
To the local businesses and supporters who encouraged us, guided us, and cheered us on - thank you. A special thank you to Porirua City Council for the opportunities you opened for us, to the Pacific Business Network for your guidance and support, and to the media outlets who blessed us with features and stories that helped share our journey.
To our family and friends: thank you for lifting us during our hardest seasons and believing in this dream from day one.
We opened as a new business right as Aotearoa entered one of the toughest economic downturns in decades. Costs kept rising while people’s budgets tightened. And like many small operators, we felt the impact of a system that doesn’t always support small business especially Māori and Pacific businesses, where access to meaningful support often feels out of reach.
Food costs rose and rose, and the only business solution was to increase prices. But that went against our heart. We opened to serve our people and to keep our food accessible, not exclusive. Maybe that makes us bad business people on paper, but raising our prices beyond what our community could afford didn’t sit right with us.
Another part of this decision comes down to what matters most: time. Between us, we have four young kids, and hospitality is a 24/7 to-do list. Somewhere along the way, we realised the currency we were losing, the one we can never earn back, was time with our children, our families, and the people who matter most. Money comes and goes, but time with them is what sits in our hearts.
To our staff: you are the backbone of Pepe’s Café. To those with us from the beginning: Hala, Daph, Maamae, Gabby, Tino and Lise, thank you for building this place with us. To those who stood with us in the end: Hannah, Mike, Eden, Micah, Dani, Kiani,Daph, Lagi and Fiona, thank you for carrying us to the finish line. We are truly grateful for you all. Nothing would have been possible without you all 🤎
This isn’t the ending we hoped for, but it is an ending filled with pride. We created something beautiful, fed our people, connected our community, and brought a little taste of home to Porirua. And maybe one day, in another form, another place, another season, we might appear again.
For now… Toe feiloa’i. See you again sometime.
With all our love,
Pepe’s Café
