First Overview of Naturopathy Worldwide – How are we Doing?

Naturopathy is a distinct traditional and complementary system of medicine practised around the world, and globally recognised as a safe, viable system of healthcare . The World Naturopathic Federation, which represents Naturopaths in all regions, has just completed its first Health Technology Assessment (HTA) into the Profession as a whole, including New Zealand Naturopaths, giving an accurate account of the Practices, Safety, Economics and Effectiveness of Naturopathic care.
The scope of the HTA was informed by research conducted by the international naturopathic community over the last thirty years. It encompasses over 2,000 peer-reviewed scientific articles including a review of more than 300 clinical studies involving over 100 different health populations. Seven international surveys of the naturopathic profession were conducted to support the findings reported in the HTA. Here's how we are doing.....

The Global Landscape of Naturopathy:
Naturopathy has strong historical and cultural roots in Europe in the 19th Century, which is considered its traditional home. However, North America is considered the home of Modern Naturopathy as this was where education, protocols and practices became more advanced, since the early 20th Century. Since then, it has quickly expanded into the Western Pacific, Africa, Latin America and Asia. Today 107 countries around the world have a Naturopathic workforce. There are currently approximately 110 000 Naturopathic Practitioners worldwide, accounting for 5.5 million Naturopathic patient visits per month.
There are currently 131 Naturopathic Educational institutions globally, teaching two main educational programmes, doctorate-level training programmes (over 4000 hours) and practitioner-level programmes (2500 hours). In some North American states, Naturopathic Doctors are recognised as Primary Healthcare Practitioners.
Typical Naturopathic Practices:
A typical Naturopathic visit anywhere in the world will generally involve the prescription, recommendation or use of an average of 4 different naturopathic treatments or therapies, due to it being a complex holistic discipline. Core therapies are:
• Applied & Clinical Nutrition
• Herbal Medicine
• Lifestyle Modifications, Yoga, Physical Medicine
• Counselling, Mind Body Medicine
• Hydrotherapy
• Other therapies based on jurisdictional regulations and naturopathic education.

Economics:
Globally, Naturopathy is covered by Health Insurance or out-of-pocket costs borne by consumers, rather than government funding, which reduces the accessibility of Naturopathic care. Economic evaluation has reliably shown it to be cost effective, particularly in the longer term for patients with chronic health conditions. Studies also suggest societal economic benefits such as reduced absenteeism and lower overall insurance costs per person. Naturopaths are well suited to play a more formal role in public health.

Safety:
Direct risks associated with Naturopathic care are infrequent and usually minor, e.g. temporary adverse reaction to botanicals. The typology of risks are what could be expected of any health profession with a substantive primary healthcare role, and are substantially less than other practitioner groups performing similar roles.

Effectiveness:
Naturopaths treat diverse physical and psychological concerns throughout the full range of a person’s life, from fertility and perinatal to palliative care. Most naturopaths focus on complex chronic health conditions and are also advocates for preventative medicine.
Naturopathic researchers have published 235 original clinical research articles investigating a wide range of health interventions in diverse sample populations. Overall, 81.1% of studies on the effectiveness of treatments showed a positive response, including;
Gastro-Intestinal Disorders are among the top reasons patients seek Naturopathic care, and showed an 82.4% positive response, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Coeliac Disease, hepatobiliary and pancreatic conditions, and many other disorders.
Endocrine Conditions, including Type II Diabetes Mellitus, Metabolic Syndrome showed 89.3% positive outcomes.
Women’s Health conditions such as Menopause and Menstrual dysfunction play a significant role in Naturopathic care, as around 70% of Naturopathic patients are female.
Other Health concerns that respond well to Naturopathic treatments are Cardiovascular Conditions, Mental Health, Musculoskeletal and Neurological Conditions, Skin Conditions, Complex Immune Conditions, Cancer and Cancer related Conditions, Obesity, Respiratory and Genitourinary Conditions.

Good Nutrition is Central to Good Mental Health, Why? Because our highly active brains need many nutrients and essential fatty acids all of the time. Humans can't synthesise most vitamins, minerals and efas, so we need to get them from our diet. Plants synthesise most of our nutritional needs, especially if they're grown in mineral rich soils. This is a great foundational start to honouring our mental health, stamina, joy and resilience. This is a wonderful book to read if you're going through a time of poor mental health, I highly recommend it.

Two Beautiful Women's Herbs in my garden. Evening Primrose (with its bright yellow flower) contains the Omega-6 oil GLA (Gamma linoleic acid) which eases PMS, acne, painful periods and tender breasts. Clary Sage (with its mauve flower) makes a wonderful essential oil which is both relaxing & uplifting, & may be used topically to the abdomen mid-cycle to ease menstrual cramps. It has abortifacient properties so do not use it if you're trying to become pregnant, or are pregnant.

Blueberry Cashew Buckwheat Breakfast
Blueberries are in season so big fat juicy ones can be locally picked, and are packed with antioxidants. Gluten Free Buckwheat (actually not a kind of wheat) makes a great base for a breakfast, either cooked or sprouted for three days, which gives them an even better nutritional and antioxidant value. In this yummy breakfast bowl I have added a good tablespoon of raw cashew nut cream, coconut cream and a chocolatey granola topping. The nuts provide valuable fats and protein for sustained morning energy!

Gluten Free Citrus Syrup Cake
This delicious moist GF cake is simple and inexpensive. The core ingredients are ground flaxseed & millet flour (from Binn Inn, Albert Street), whole citrus (lemon, orange or grapefruit), and honey. Flaxseed meal is a much cheaper alternative to ground almonds, and NZ grown! The cake has a rich, bitter sweet citrus flavour, great served with tangy coconut or other natural yoghurt. Here's the recipe;

Ingredients:
1 large citrus fruit, whole (e.g. orange or lemon, I used grapefruit)
3 eggs
2 ripe bananas
160gm ground flaxseed
140gm millet flour
1 tsp baking soda
100ml extra virgin or other olive oil
1/2 cup honey
3/4 cup water

Method:
Add the whole fruit to a small pot, cover with water and boil for 15mins until soft, then take out of the water and cool.

Preheat the oven to 180 C, and grease a 20cm round cake tin.

In a food processor, blend the fruit and olive oil until smooth. Add the bananas and eggs and blend again until smooth.

In a separate bowl add the ground flaxseed, millet flour and baking soda, and mix thoroughly until combined. Slowly fold the dry mix into the wet mix until combined. Spoon the batter into the cake tin and bake 30-40 mins until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out dry.

Meanwhile make the syrup by placing 3/4 cup water and 1/2 cup honey in a small pot and simmering until dissolved together.

When the cake is cooked, take it out of the oven and cover with a tea towel to prevent moisture loss while it cools. While warm, poke holes with a sharp knife over the surface of the cake and pour the syrup evenly over the surface so that it soaks in evenly. Leave it to cool in the cake tin and then transfer onto a large plate to serve. Enjoy!

Spanish Flavours!
These warmly spiced lentils go great with Spanish potato tortilla and end of season tomatoes and basil! Each are versatile foods for lunches as well. Here are the recipes;
Spanish Lentils
1 cup dried brown lentils (soaked overnight and washed)
2 tbsp olive oil
2 garlic cloves,
1/2 onion
1 carrot, washed, skin on
1 potato, washed, skin on
1/2 green capsicum, seeds removed
2 whole cloves
1 bay leaf
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp ground paprika
salt to season
Finely dice all the vegetables. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan and saute the garlic and onion until transparent. Add the lentils, carrot, potatoes, capsicum, bay leaf, cloves, cumin, paprika and cover well with water. Bring to the boil and then turn down and allow to simmer for 50 minutes until lentils are soft and mushy. Remove bay leaf, season to taste and serve in bowls.

Spanish Tortilla
2 large floury potatoes, such as Agria, washed but not peeled
4 tbsp olive oil
4 large eggs
salt
Dice potatoes into 1cm cubes. In a medium sized frying pan, heat olive oil and fry potatoes, moving to prevent sticking, until just brown. Turn heat down to low. Beat and season the eggs. Pour over potatoes while still in the pan. Cook the potato omelette over a low heat until the centre of the omelette is fully set. slide a spatula under the omelette to ensure it is not stuck to the surface of the pan, and then turn it out onto a dinner plate, upside down. Cut into wedges and serve.

Spanish Salad
3 large ripe tomatoes, washed
1 clove garlic, very finely chopped
1 handful of fresh basil leaves, finely shredded
2 tbsp olive oil
