💙🤍HAPPY WELLINGTON ANNIVERSAY DAY💛🖤
🚢 PETONE FACT #1:
DID YOU KNOW...today is officially WELLINGTON ANNIVERSARY DAY? The day the first English settlers arrived at Pito-one (Petone) beach on the "Aurora" in 1840 (the first New Zealand Company immigrant ship to leave Gravesend in England on 18 September 1839) 183 years ago. The Aurora actually arrived on the 20th January, but a bad southerly storm meant the passengers could not disembark until the 22nd January!

Petone is NZ's first planned settlement - the story the settlers were told by the New Zealand Company was that Petone would be like London - with the Hutt River like The Thames River, and the streets like the layout of London's streets! It was going to be named "Britannia".

👮 PETONE FACT #2:
DID YOU KNOW...today is also the day NZ had its first Police force? Passengers on the Aurora signed the Crown’s provisional constitution agreeing that a committee of leading settlers could make regulations for preserving the peace. Upon Aurora’s arrival, Richard Baxter was appointed as Police Magistrate, and he had two constables and two petty constables working with him.
