How important it is to be a registered food business?
One of the questions I usually get with our customers and other cake makers.
I can’t stress this enough, it is so important to be council registered.
To be totally transparent with our customers and followers, we also started as an unregistered food business as I thought, “oh this is just a side hustle and like any other of my “many” hobbies when Im bored this will stop eventually specially when I get exhausted”. But low and behold after 3 years we’re still here and even though we’re exhausted we still love making every cakes for everyone.
Being a registered food business means that you have a thorough food safety plan which has been independently checked and verified regularly.
It means I have a process in place to ensure that the food that I’m selling and making is safe. That I have a records of each ingredients used in every cakes and desserts I make in case of a recall (i.e value bag peanuts recently recalled), cleaning schedules, temperature checks, sanitation procedures etc.
And it will give my customers peace of mind that their cakes are not only beautiful and delicious but also made in a clean and safe kitchen.
There are alot of cake makers out there registered and unregistered and we’re here to support everyone. But knowing that what we’re selling goes inside the body of our customers we’re happy to share our learnings with the verification process (especially if you’re finding the process to much wordy). If you have questions with regarding this or our journey we’re just a message away.
So, let’s support and help each other, celebrate our differences, and make lots of cake and desserts! There’s a big world out there and everybody needs a cake!
PS: You can find our business registration with NZBN and company registered. And our Food Registration at MPI all are public documso go ahead and check!
