Sometimes the most valuable discoveries aren't measured in dollars—they're measured in stories.
What started as a routine tidy-up in the Kaye's Bakery/Penniall Museum upstairs quickly turned into something we'll never forget.
While sorting through some long-forgotten items, Luella came across what looked like an old army sack. Curious to see what was inside, she carefully opened it... and realised it was so much more than just an old bag.
Inside was an incredible collection of World War II military belongings that had been tucked away for decades. There were original army bags, still marked with a name and service number, British flags, a sewing kit used for repairing uniforms, and discharge papers dated 1946.
It was one of those moments where everything else seemed to stop. Holding these pieces of history in our hands, we couldn't help but wonder where they'd been, what they'd seen, and the story behind the person who once carried them.
It's moments like these that remind us why preserving history is so important. Every item has a story to tell, and without taking the time to listen, those stories can so easily be lost.
This discovery is just the beginning. Over the coming months, we'll be researching each item, uncovering the stories behind them, and creating individual plaques so they can become a permanent part of Kaye's Bakery's history collection. We hope they'll help tell the stories of those who came before us and be enjoyed by generations to come.
