The UK Government is in the process of a once-in-a-generation review of loaf labelling and marketing.
The problem is, Defra will not commit to including issues of fundamental importance in the imminent public consultation, effectively silencing the knowledge and views of small bakery owners and everyone who buys bread.
For example, some additives do not have to be declared, ingredients lists don’t have to be displayed at supermarket in-store ‘loaf tanning salons’, and there are no legal definitions to help prevent people from people being misled by inappropriate use of terms including freshly-baked, wholegrain, sourdough, artisan bread, heritage grains and more.
The believes that people spending their hard-earned cash have the right to know what they’re buying, and that small bakery owners deserve to be able to compete on fair terms.
