In the early 1980s, most schools did not yet teach CAD, so architects learned through practice, manuals and self-study. Digital drawings still had to become physical, and offices had to define new standards for annotations and dimensions.

Want to discover more about the invention of CAD and the computerization of architectural labor?
Join us this 5th of February at 17:00 in Plaza Vertigo, where one of the curators, Galo Canizares (), will tell us all about it.

SPACE FOR DIALOGUE

The greatest challenge of contemporary society seems to be everyday recognition within our cities and the way we dwell. Our cities are rooted in a strong binary condition between the large scale anonymity of the metropolitan and the protected small scale of the dwelling. Both ends of the spectrum serve a functional purpose in day to day life, but with modernisation and scaling of cities over time, a third element essential for civic city life has moved to the background. A
sphere for dialogue where protected ideas meet and where the fast movement of the city slows down for moments of resonance.

The aim of this thesis is to critically evaluate the relation between these three spheres and to answer how the use of this third sphere can blur the boundaries between the anonymous and the protected. The architectural result of these interpretations are implemented on the
transformation of the forgotten Belgische Boerenbond site in Antwerp, seeking to revitalize the social ties in the neighbourhood Amandus-Atheneum by the introduction of a community centre and an inner-block dwelling community.

HEALTHY AGEING IN THE DENSIFYING CITY: PROMOTING THE WELLBEING OF OLDER ADULTS IN EINDHOVEN

Eindhoven is facing significant growth. While urban densification offers numerous benefits, it also creates challenges, especially for older adults who are more vulnerable to its negative effects. Dense environments often lack green space for example, contributing to inactivity and isolation. The concept of healthy ageing—enabling older adults to remain active, independent, and connected—has thus been introduced in international policy.

This project explores how healthy ageing can be addressed in a densifying Eindhoven
through five principles: inclusive housing, walkable neighbourhoods, vitality in the public realm, comfort and placemaking, and safety in public space. The resulting masterplan reimagines the area north of the canal with a green vitality axis that promotes activity, social interaction, and access to nature. With essential amenities within walking distance, the plan fosters an age-friendly, resilient community. By valuing the needs and contributions of older adults, this project shows how Eindhoven can grow sustainably while remaining inclusive for older generations.

Surtout de Table: End of the Year Exhibition for Architecture and Urbanism

CASA Vertigo is pleased to invite you to the opening of the exhibition Surtout de Table: End of the Year Exhibition for Architecture and Urbanism on June 19th from 17:00.

What are the Master students of the Built Environment at the Eindhoven University of Technology doing?

To present the bold, diverse, and fearless work of this enthusiastic and hardworking generation, TU/e proudly rolls out a Surtout de Table — reviving an old tradition, but with a sharp contemporary twist. If in the late 1600s, these monumental table centerpieces dazzled with miniature Roman cities, their temples, colonnades, and triumphal arches perched on ornate pedestals, celebrating power and splendor, today, on our table, you will encounter the fresh, urgent, and unapologetically contemporary work of every TU/e master design studio.

Over six intense months, each studio has tackled a distinct theme, diving deep into pressing questions and future challenges. The result? A spectacular array of design models, each with its own fierce style and unapologetic attitude, ready to take their place at the center of attention.

This is no passive display. These models demand your gaze, spark your imagination, and provoke your curiosity. They stand together, shoulder to shoulder, on our grand dinner table — a feast not of food, but of ideas, vision, and possibility. So come closer. Walk around. Soak it in. Be part of the conversation. Come and enjoy!

Big Plans: 10 Women Urbanists Shape the Modern World

CASA Vertigo is pleased to invite you to an exhibition talk with Evelien Pieters as part of our current exhibition Big Plans: 10 Women Urbanists Shape the Modern World on April 24 from 16:00. Evelien Pieters coordinates, researches, writes, and advises on projects at the intersection of architecture and living environment, with an eye for gender equality, inclusivity, and working cultures. She is the founder of Platform Architecture and Feminism, which builds a community where women (and everyone who feels involved) can share their experiences about architectural practice, investigate the underlying structures, and dream about a more inclusive sector. Together with Evelien, we will investigate the current position of women in urbanism, architecture, and design: what can be improved, and what are constructive actions to achieve advancement?

Big Plans: 10 Women Urbanists Shape the Modern World

A recognition of urbanism as a wide-ranging, contextual field that thrives on shared knowledge and insights…

Throughout the 20th century, women planned regions, cities and neighborhoods, shaped policies, developed technologies, and advanced ideas that transformed urbanism. But even though their influence extended far beyond physical spaces, their contributions to modern urban planning has remained overlooked. Big Plans takes a first step towards complementing 20th century historiography by offering an introduction to the lives and work of ten leading women urbanists.

As they worked on housing, infrastructure, and regional planning, as they tackled population growth, urbanization, industrialization, and decolonization, these women urbanists added depth and humanity to modernism. By writing, teaching, and collaborating, these women urbanists they fostered a global exchange of knowledge that enriched modernist discourse.

But more than any uniquely female approach to urbanism, what distinguishes their work is the shared belief in urbanism as a force for equality. Recognizing their varied roles and approaches expands our understanding of 20th-century urban planning as a dynamic and collective field, driven by diverse voices and ideas.

A conversation across generations of women architects.

Immeasurably Important: Artificial Intelligence and the soft values of architecture

How can AI change your work?
Is Artificial Intelligence (AI) just a new tool to generate spectacular architectural images, or is it really going to change the way we develop and design buildings and cities?

CASA Vertigo, Tangram Architects, and Architectuurcentrum Eindhoven invite you to explore what AI can mean for your work. Examples will be given by the speakers to give you an idea of the possibilities of working with AI. The speakers are looking forward to have an interesting discussion with the audience. Bring your questions, doubts and fears and let us all learn about AI.

Want to get inspired on forehand? Visit the exhibition ‘Immeasurably important’, now at display in Casa Vertigo at the TU/e. The exhibition calls for a new paradigm: developing AI tools capable of integrating soft, qualitative values into architectural solutions.

Looking forward to see you!

Join our discussion while enjoying free drinks and snacks on Thursday, February 20th, 16.00-18.00, TU/e Casa Vertigo. Immeasurably Important: Artificial Intelligence and the soft values of architecture

CASA Vertigo is pleased to invite you to the opening of the exhibition Immeasurably Important: Artificial Intelligence and the soft values of architecture on January 9th from 16:30. Join us for an inaugural speech by a special guest, and a first preview of the exhibition while enjoying some bites and beers.

The advent of AI-driven design tools is reshaping architecture. While concerns about job loss dominate public debate, artificial intelligence should be seen as a collaborator in shaping the future of architectural design. By combining the the computational power of AI with the intuitive creativity of designers, we have the opportunity to redefine what is quality architecture.

Immeasurably Important calls for a new paradigm: developing AI tools capable of integrating soft, qualitative values into architectural solutions. Since human creativity excels in capturing subtle, immeasurable qualities—well-being, cultural identity, and ecological harmony—that computers struggle to quantify, by fostering a shared language between designers and machines, AI can be pushed beyond mere data-driven efficiency toward meaningful contributions.

Structured into four zones, the exhibition explores different dimensions of the relationship between artificial intelligence and architecture. If the first zone emphasizes the essential “soft values” of creativity, intuition, and integrity, the second zone analyses how current data- and AI-driven design tools manage complex, measurable elements while identifying areas for future development. The third zone, however, envisions a future where AI seamlessly integrates soft values into the design process, fostering innovative, human-centered collaboration between designers and machines. Combined, these zones invite critical reflection on architecture’s evolving landscape and how future AI design tools can embrace the soft values of architecture to ensure a richer, more sustainable built environment for generations to come.

Together Tomorrow: Reimagining Everyday Practices

Together Tomorrow explores the potential of citizen led community initiatives that challenge capitalist narratives of growth and envision a radically different way of organizing everyday life in cities. The exhibition hopes to be a good conversation starter to envision a future beyond individualism, self-interest and dominance over nature. A future where we can thrive by slowing down, engaging in motivating as well as mundane activities, bonding with others, and repairing and reutilizing urban space as a treasured artefact. In many ways, the local initiatives presented are taking matters into their own hands to combat today’s crises. While we acknowledge that these practices cannot change the world alone, they signify that we are not helpless, and they point to a different way of organising and valuing daily life. Guided by values such as sufficiency, care, conviviality, and creativity, not the push of economic growth and overproduction, the exhibited urban practices create meaningful relationships between people, places, and their wider communities.
