After my younger sister got married before me, she stopped calling me "Sister." She started calling me by my first name.

At our first family meeting after her wedding, I drove my car. She drove her husband's.

After my elder brothers spoke, I was about to say something when my mother cut me off:

"Let the married woman speak first." She meant my younger sister.

I quietly stood up and walked to my car. My mother looked at me and added,

"You're not the only one with a car anymore. Swallow your pride and ask your sister how she got a man."

That was the last time I went to the family house.

Months later, I met my amazing husband. We got married. We both agreed not to have children immediately, I'm 27. He's 29.

We just wanted to enjoy each other for a while. We were both okay with our decision and didn't owe anyone an explanation.

A year later we attended my younger sister's third child's birthday. She handed her baby to my husband. He smiled awkw@rdly he loves kids, but he's scared of carrying them.

They're too fragile and he fears he might drop them. He passed the child to me gently and quickly.

Next thing my sister made a comment along the lines of, "This one your husband is running away from my baby, why won't babies run away from your home."

She said it jokingly in our language, my husband didn't understand but he saw the look on my face and instead of my mother to reprimand or correct her, she laughed.

I calmly returned her baby, turned to my husband, and said, "Let's go." He nodded. No questions asked.

Later, my mother called to say I was petty. That it was just a joke. My brothers called too-asking if I was jealous of my younger sister.

But the one person who made the comment? She never called. Not even once.

Fast forward to today. She's pregnant again—baby number four. She and her husband want to travel for a vacation and rest before the baby comes.

They need someone they trust to help watch the kids for a few days. Guess who she called?

The day I saw my baby hiccuping without her clothes on eh, fear catch me.

The way her chest compresses ehn! 🥺🥺

Told my mom to wear her clothes back quickly cause it was painful to watch for me. Whilst in the hospital, she was hiccuping a lot and my mum said to give her water and because she was really fussy that night and this mama was beyond exhausted, I gave in to my mothers advice.

The day breaks and the midwife came to check on us and I asked her what we could give baby for hiccups and she says nothing.
Me: seriously?
She: yes, she used to hiccup in your womb, did you use to give her anything? 🤷🏾‍♀️ So it will go away by itself. I asked if I could give water and that I already have her a little and she says not to give her again and proceeds to lecture me on how breastmilk has all that baby needs including water and no other liquid or food is required until six months. She said to give breastmilk if I must give anything.

Since been home, it’s taken plenty shouts and fights to stop my mom from continuing to give her water or anything else at all like her famous bitter cola infused water for the baby’s tummy 😆

Often times, I catch her complaining how baby is thirsty and I’ve refused to give her water or how baby needs her breastfeeding to be supplemented with akamu - she said igbachaa ya akamu, she will sleep off and be too weak to cry 😹

Walahi, I’ve told my mom several times she’s lucky I’m her daughter cause a daughter Inlaw with my temper fit don fight her physically o and she won’t be at fault cause she no Dey hear word with all those her traditional practices 🤪😆

Since I won’t let her give baby water, I let her put thread on baby’s head cause that don’t hurt at least and I have to let her take her little wins too.

It’s literally the old guard vs the new guard in this omugwo we are doing 😆
