There has been a social media buzz about pap(ogi/akamu) and stock fish for some time now. That pap is a useless food for the elderly. Now I have come to address that of a pap professionally as a Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist (RDN) and as a Food Doctor as well as as a chef who has undergone rigorous and intensive trainings. This post will be a bit lengthy but very educative(so try to read line by line).

Pap/ogi/akamu is one of the traditional foods in Nigeria that has survived the test of time. Now read up: Pap can serve as a medium or food carrier or food vehicle for other nutrients supplementation especially for the elderly who at their age brackets tend to love liquid/semi liquid foods due to some physiological changes in them. Examples of the changes :

DENTAL ISSUES: Many of them loose their teeth as they age or have gum problems or the remaining teeth are not strong enough to chew hard foods

DYSPHAGIA(Difficulty in swallowing): some ailments that comes with old age (eg stroke, Parkinson’s disease etc) may reduce the ability to swallow foods. At this point, solid food can cause pain in the throat, choking or aspiration.

REDUCED APETITE & TASTE: They tend to have reduced apetite and taste sensations. This is where liquid/semi liquid foods come to play their roles because they have smooth mouthfeel, flowing/semi flowing consistency making them easy to consume. Another point is they can be twisted ti have more flavours and encourage eating even in low appetite because they can be sipped.

DIGESTIVE CHANGES: Reduced secretion of certain digestive juices can lead to indigestion/ constipation or malabsorption of some nutrients. Pap is easily digestible and it is gentle on the gut as well.

NUTRITION TIPS: instead of to entirely condemn pap or refusing your aged parents pap when they demand for it, Do the following:

# You can add some fruits in the pap (esp soft fruits) as seen in the pictures . This makes it nutrient dense and add fibre (soluble fibre) which aids digestion

In absence of teeth, you can blend the fruits to a very smooth puree(please dont sieve so that the fibre will still be intact) and add to the already prepared pap. Please note: you can add fruits available to you(especially our locally sourced fruits to reduce cost). Healthy eating shouldnt be costly and boring.

Add milk to it to increase the protein content of it(any milk of your choice be it full cream milk or skimmed milk, the protein content are this the same or there be a slight difference ).

For the side Food: you can serve with very soft boiled beans or moi moi. If you want to use yam/potato for elderly with no teeth, i recommend you boil it till very soft and mash it.

For sweeteners: you dont need to do too much. A dash of honey/date syrup is okay. You can equally serve it without sweetener if you are using blended fruits.

Now tell me if your aged mother/father wont rush this food of mine? Something very pleasing to the eyes(an adage says “the eyes eat before the mouth)

Hydrate before you caffeinate!!!

Yes I’m talking to you, I mean you(why are you looking back😀).

I know most of you are confused which one should come first in the morning as you wake up, WATER OR TEA?

💦 💦 WATER should be the very first thing you should take in the morning. Here are the reasons

It’s advisable to drink water first upon waking up in the morning, before consuming tea. This practice helps rehydrate your body after several hours of sleep, supports digestion, and prepares your system for the day ahead.

🥤 Why Water Should Come First

After a night of sleep, your body is naturally dehydrated. Drinking water first thing in the morning can:
• Rehydrate your body: Restores fluid balance and kickstarts bodily functions.
• Boost mental performance: Improves alertness and concentration.
• Aid digestion: Prepares your digestive system for the day.
• Support metabolism: May assist in weight management by promoting a feeling of fullness.
. Lubricate joints: water helps to lubricant the joints and get you fit for the day’s activities

🍵 Caution with Tea on an Empty Stomach

Consuming tea, especially on an empty stomach, can lead to:
• Stomach irritation: Tea contains tannins and caffeine(though not teas contain caffeine) which can increase stomach acid and cause discomfort.
• Nausea or headaches: Some individuals may experience these symptoms when drinking tea without prior food intake.
• Dehydration: Tea acts as a diuretic, potentially leading to increased urine output and further dehydration.

✅ Recommended Morning Routine
1. Start with water: Drink a glass of water upon waking to rehydrate. I have been practicing this for over 5 years now and I can attest the results. I take 500ml of water(room temperature) first thing as I wake up
2. Wait before tea: Allow some time after drinking water before consuming tea, preferably after having a light meal.
3. Choose herbal teas: If you prefer tea, opt for caffeine-free herbal varieties like ginger or peppermint, which are gentler on the stomach
